Repair and Refinish Heart Pine Flooring – Black Hammock Island

Repeat customers called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to repair and refinish the old Heart Pine flooring in a farmhouse on Black Hammock Island, on the Northside of Jacksonville, Florida.

We have been working with these homeowners for quite some time at another of their properties. They sold that property and moved onto a farmhouse on Black Hammock Island. Their new property includes plenty of land for their chickens, mules, horses, and other animals. This property offers a scenic location; situated along side of and overlooking the Amelia River.

The farmhouse was built with logs harvested from the property. And the flooring in the home was milled from some of those Heart Pine trees, too. Flooring in the photos is New Growth Heart Pine. Our crew had to replace several Heart Pine planks in the floor that had been damaged. We had some New Growth Heart Pine flooring that was congruent to the existing Pine flooring. Our team changed out the damaged boards and then sanded down the floor with our Lagler-Hummel belt sander, and hand scraped the edges.

Next we applied a Bona oil modified sealer as the first coat, to keep as close as we could to the previous look. (Sanding did remove some ambering and patina of the old Heart Pine flooring, so the new finish would result in a slightly lighter look.) After buffing down the first coat of oil modified Sealer, we then applied two coats of Pallmann Gold satin for a hardener filled topcoat.

The Heart Pine floors in this farmhouse get a lot of wear. Dan’s Floor Store has these farmhouse homeowners on a flooring maintenance schedule. We will be back to refresh these floors within three years. It’s important to refinish this species of flooring every 3 to 5 years. This regular maintenance routine prevents dirt from getting ground into the soft grain of the wood.

Unfortunately, our Dan’s Floor Store crew didn’t get photos of the fully refinished floors. But, you can get an idea from the finishing photos, and, needless to say, our customers were thrilled with the outcome! Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Heart Pine Plank Flooring – Sand and Finish – Springfield

Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 does flooring projects for residential and commercial clients, and for local building and renovation contractors. This is about the 10th job we have done for this client. It’s always nice when a prior client appreciates your work, and calls you with a new job!

This flooring project took place in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, in the historic Springfield neighborhood.

The home was built in the 1930s, and has existing Heart Pine plank flooring. Our client contracted us to sand and finish these old wooden floors.

Pre-Refinishing.

Our crew sanded the Heart Pine plank flooring, and hand scraped the edges.

Sanding.

Next we applied 1 coat of Bona dri-fast Sealer.

And then we finished these old Heart Pine floors with 2 coats of Bona Woodline satin oil-modified polyurethane.

Between application of the Bona finish coats, we screened these Heart Pine floors for proper bonding and to give the smoothest possible results.

When we screen wood flooring, we use a buffer and a mesh screen covered with an abrasive, instead of regular sand paper discs. Screening provides lighter abrasion to the floor finish, providing a good roughness that helps the new finish coat of polyurethane adhere properly.

Refinishing.

Sand and Finish Heart Pine Flooring Repair – St. Augustine, FL

The owner of a home on the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Augustine had some water damage to the Heart Pine flooring in his kitchen and living room areas.

The homeowner replaced the damaged Heart Pine wood flooring himself. And then he was referred (by one of our prior clients) to Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to sand and finish his wood floors.

Our crew sanded the old flooring and new flooring together. To begin, we had to make several angle cuts with rough sandpaper, due to the tough old finish on the wood floors. Next our crew sanded the floors with fine sand paper, buffed the floors, and then hand scraped all the corners.

We sealed the floor with Bona DriFast Sealer. Our crew buffed the floors between the first and second coats of Sealer.

Then we finished the Heart Pine flooring with 2 coats of Bona Woodline satin oil-modified polyurethane.

Sand and Finish Old Heart Pine Wood Floors – San Marco

A home improvement and renovation project in a San Marco home led to a call to Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to restore the old heart pine wood floors in the home.

Dan’s Floor Store crew has repaired and restored many old wood floors in the Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine, Florida area.

These old heart pine wood floors are circa late 1800s. The wood was very beautiful, and ultra sappy. These old heart pine plank floors had not been refinished in over 100 years!

Our crew sanded and hand scraped the old floors.

Then we applied Bona Woodline Oil Modified Polyurethane finish.

Refinishing Old Heart Pine Flooring – Springfield

Refinishing Water Damaged Heart Pine Flooring – St. Augustine

The wood floors of many homes in St. Augustine, Florida were water damaged in the fall of 2016 during Hurricane Matthew. Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 has been actively working to help as many of these local homeowners as possible to restore their wood floors as part of getting on with their lives.

This home is one of many charming buildings along Avenida Menendez. The home is located just south of the landmark Bridge of Lions which crosses the Mantanzas River.

The home was build in the 1800s, and has retained the original heart pine floors.

Heart Pine wood is the heartwood, the dense, center-most wood of the long leaf pine tree, and it is very hard and strong, with beautiful coloring and figure patterns.

Water damaged old heart pine flooring needs repair and refinishingHurricane Matthew put the wood floors in this old home under water. We sanded and refinished the wood flooring in the home next door to this one about a month ago.

We have been contracted to refinish the water damaged wood floors in two more homes on this street, within three houses of one another in our schedule, due to the same storm.

The wood floors have had many months to dry out, prior to our arrival.

We sanded the water damaged heart pine flooring down to the bare wood. Even as old as this heart pine wood flooring is, heart pine can be very sappy. And the sap gums up our sanding papers. So we end up using a lot more sanding paper for heart pine refinishing jobs.

Our crew finished the sanded heart pine flooring with 3 coats of Bona Woodline satin polyurethane.

Refinishing and Restoring Old Heart Pine Plank Flooring – St. Augustine

Refinished old heart pine plank flooringOwners of a home on the harbor in St. Augustine contacted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for one of our free consultations and estimates on refinishing and restoring their water damaged old Heart Pine flooring.

Living near the water, the wood floors in their home had gotten water damaged during hurricane Matthew in the fall of 2016.

The water damage made the old Heart Pine plank flooring in this home very unlevel, but we knew how to restore and refinish them.

The wood was so unlevel our Dan’s Floor Store crew had to sand the wood floors 5 times at a 45 degree angle to get it flat again. Then we could come back and sand with a cut straight with the wood grain for the final sanding.

These Heart Pine planks came from Longleaf Pine trees, which were overharvested in southeastern America in the 1900’s and can now only be reclaimed or river recovered.

The old Heart Pine plank flooring in this home is very, very old. We found the old, sanded flooring to be stunning looking, even before staining or finishing with polyurethane.

The homeowners wanted Dan’s Floor Store to refinish and restore their old Heart Pine plank flooring to match the same color as the stairs in the home (which had not been damaged by the water.

We chose Bona Rosewood stain as a good, blending match with the stairs.

Our crew finished this project with 3 coats of gloss Oil-Modified Polyurethane Woodline finish by Bona.

The old Heart Pine plank floors look great again, and our clients were very happy with the results of our work.
