Plywood subfloor for Red Oak Flooring Installation – Avondale

Some wood flooring installations require the prior addition of a plywood subfloor over the concrete slab.

View of the St. Johns River from Avondale homeDan’s Floor Store installed 400 square feet of plywood subfloor in an Avondale home.

This work was in preparation for a weave-in rift and quarter sawn solid Red Oak wood floor installation, with sand and finish project.

First we lay down a 6 mil thick layer of Visqueen moisture barrier along with lap cement. We carefully roll out the plastic moisture barrier to cover the concrete slab after laying tar down with a trowel.

Next we carry in our sheets of 3/4″ CDX plywood to serve as subfloor. We cut the the plywood to fit according to the American Plywood Association / Engineered Wood Association and National Wood Flooring Association standards

We fasten each sheet of plywood with our Hilti DX2 nailer gun. This gun shoots 1 1/2″nails thru the plywood and into the concrete. This step really fastens our plywood securely to the concrete slab!

In a few weeks we will return to our client’s home and weave-in and install, then later sand and finish the Red Oak flooring installation. Here’s our link to our article about about the installation of the rift and quarter sawn Red Oak hardwood flooring.

Wood Floor Weave-in and Install at the King and Bear

Installed - new engineered hand scraped birch wood flooringThis Dan’s Floor Store wood floor weave-in and install project took place in a home at the King and Bear community – part of the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.

The client wanted to replace the tile floors in the hallways, kitchen, and dining room with wood flooring.

And they wanted the new wood flooring to appear as a continuation of the existing wood flooring that had been previously installed in their home.

First the tile and thinset used to adhere the tiles to the concrete subfloor had to be removed, and the entire area to be covered in wood flooring had be be leveled.

To match the existing wood flooring, we found a beautiful engineered hand scraped Birch wood flooring, 5″ x 3/8″ planks from the Rucsello collection by Bella Cera.

To blend the new wood flooring in with the existing wood flooring, we wove in ten boards, and went on to extend the new wood flooring throughout all the hallways, in the kitchen, and in the dining room of the home.

The weave-in and installation turned out beautifully, and our client was very pleased. In all, we installed 600 square feet of wood flooring.

Red Oak Flooring Refinish in Englewood

Grand old solid Red Oak floor after refinishingThe homeowners of an early 20th century home in the Englewood neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida called Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation about the old Red Oak flooring in their home.

  • They wanted to know if the flooring could be refinished, or needed to be replaced.

We found that the house had some very old solid Red Oak wood flooring, which had accumulated numerous water stains and pet urine stains, along with years of wear. (Some of the stains are visible in the before refinishing photos.) Most of this Red Oak flooring could be refinished, but some flooring was damaged so badly that it had to be replaced with solid wood flooring planks.

Next we sanded the whole floor, to prepare the wood for staining and finishing.

Discussing the project with our clients, we concluded that for this job we would need to use the technique of applying water to “pop” the grain of the wood, prior to applying the stain.

  • From our experience, this extra step allows the stain to penetrate deeper, creating a deeper, darker tone.

After “water pop”, staining, and finishing, these grand old solid Red Oak floors look good and are ready for years of service for our clients.
