Solid White Oak Flooring Installation in Historic St. Augustine

"She Shed" exteriorHomeowners in historic St. Augustine, near Riberia Street, contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to install wood flooring in their recently constructed 2 story structure behind their home.

We called this our “She Shed” project, going with popular definition of a private place in or near a home where a lady can relax, and do what ever she pleases.

Our clients chose quartersawn solid White Oak by Heritage Forest Products for the main flooring, with a border of solid Southern Black Cherry from Goodwin Heart Pine.

Our work started before the stairs to the loft were installed. We used a ladder to get up to the second level, and to help us get the wood flooring up there, too.

With the subfloors leveled, we installed the Southern Black Cherry wood border.

Our crew installed the quartersawn solid White Oak flooring.

After the wood flooring and border installation was complete, we allowed the wood several months time for acclamation. Then our crew sanded and hand scraped the edges of the wood flooring and borders.

And finally our crew applied 3 coats of durable Bona oil modified polyurethane satin finish.

Quarter Sawn Solid White Oak Flooring – Install and Weave In – St. Augustine

Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 enjoys working on flooring improvement projects in homes and businesses in the Northeastern Florida area. They were adding an extension on the rear of their riverfront home, and wanted to extend the quarter sawn solid White Oak flooring inside.

There was no leveling required for this job, because the wood flooring was installed directly to the subfloor. It was a nailed down installation. (We used our Woodwise White Oak test kit to verify the existing wood flooring was white oak.) Our crew started work by cutting weave in pattern into the ends of the existing White Oak flooring planks. This will create a continuous look to the pattern of the wood flooring.

After removing the cut out wood, we began weaving in the White Oak flooring planks. and installing the unfinished, solid White Oak quarter sawn select flooring by Oak Crest Lumber.

Our floor sander vacuum filled up 7 bags with sawdust while rough sanding the new quarter sawn White Oak flooring, and the finish from the old White Oak plank floor.

Our crew finished the quarter sawn White Oak flooring with three coats of tough and durable Bona Woodline satin polyurethane.

Refinishing Old Wood Floors and Stairs in Historic Springfield

Refinishing old wood floors to their earlier elegance always gives a little more happiness to the Dan’s Floor Store crew when we are working with historically significant homes. We are helping to preserve our Country’s architectural history.

Dan’s Floor store has restored old wood floors in homes in historic St. Augustine, and for this project, we were refinishing wood floors in the historic Springfield community of Jacksonville, Florida.

Actually, the Springfield Historic District is a neighborhood located to the north of downtown Jacksonville. Established in 1869, Springfield is one of only three federally designated historic districts in Jacksonville, the other historic districts being Riverside/Avondale and Old Ortega.

Dan’s Floor Store refinished old face nailed solid Quarter Sawn solid White Oak wood floors (downstairs) and solid Heart Pine wood floors (upstairs).

Here are some photos of the condition of these old wood floors and stairs when we arrived at the client’s home.

We used the buffer before coating and in between coats of finish to abrade the wood flooring for proper bonding. Stair treads need to be edged twice, scraped and then palm sanded prior to coating.

Here you can see some edger work on Quarter Sawn White Oak wood flooring in the kitchen. We use the radiator edger to get under cabinets, back to the toe kicks.

And these photos show the refinished wood floors. We took some of the photos with the same views as we took the “before” photos above, so you can see how good these restored floors look now.
