Installing Australian Cypress Flooring in St. Augustine

For this project, Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 was contracted to install the wood flooring in a new home, under construction in the Moultrie area of St. Augustine, Florida.
And here’s a view of the property the project home is located upon (actually a 40 acre estate) from Phillips highway.

Our client provided a 4 1/4″ wide by 3/4″ thick, solid Australian Cypress plank flooring (in random lengths) for our Dan’s Floor Store crew to install.

We began this flooring project by sanding the edges of the plywood sheet subfloor. The new wood floor needs a level surface beneath it to perform best.

Our crew cut a groove along the bottom of the corner fireplace hearth. This groove will allow us to tuck the ends of the Cypress planks properly underneath the hearth.

We checked the moisture content of the Cypress planks and of the sheet plywood subfloor. Our crew needs to make sure the moisture content of the flooring has acclimated to the relative humidity of the home. This helps prevent wood flooring problems after installation, like warping, buckling, or cracking.
We also took a peek out the back window of the home and saw a deer.

Our crew installed the Australian Cypress using Bostik GreenForce adhesive for a reliable, durable bond. The Cypress planks come in assorted lengths, for added variety in the looks of this flooring installation.

As can be seen in these photos, this batch of Australian Cypress became some very knotty wood flooring.

Engineered Birch Hardwood Flooring Installation – Palencia

These homeowners in the Palencia community in St. Augustine, Florida contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to install wood flooring in their home.

The couple had selected a 5″ wide, hand scraped and chiseled, and lightly distressed engineered Birch hardwood flooring design. This Birch flooring is called Chattooga, from the River Ridge collection by Palmetto Road floors.

We began this project by moving furniture and removing the old carpeting, and taking a peek out in the backyard of the project home.

Our crew leveled the subflooring, to prepare it for our new wood flooring. For the sheet plywood subfloor upstairs, this means sanding the edges flat. We used Bostik Self Leveling underlayment on the concrete slab on the main floor.

Quarter Sawn Solid White Oak Flooring – Install and Weave In – St. Augustine

They were adding an extension on the rear of their riverfront home, and wanted to extend the quarter sawn solid White Oak flooring inside.

There was no leveling required for this job, because the wood flooring was installed directly to the subfloor. It was a nailed down installation. (We used our Woodwise White Oak test kit to verify the existing wood flooring was white oak.) Our crew started work by cutting weave in pattern into the ends of the existing White Oak flooring planks. This will create a continuous look to the pattern of the wood flooring.

After removing the cut out wood, we began weaving in the White Oak flooring planks. and installing the unfinished, solid White Oak quarter sawn select flooring by Oak Crest Lumber.

Our floor sander vacuum filled up 7 bags with sawdust while rough sanding the new quarter sawn White Oak flooring, and the finish from the old White Oak plank floor.

Our crew finished the quarter sawn White Oak flooring with three coats of tough and durable Bona Woodline satin polyurethane.

Install, Screen and Coat Red Oak Flooring – Hampton Glen

Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 got a call from homeowners in Hampton Glen, a subdivision next to Deerwood (off Baymeadows Road in Jacksonville). These prior clients wanted us to install some Red Oak flooring in their master bedroom, and screen and coat the Red Oak flooring we had previously sanded and finished for them.

Our crew removed 250 square feet of existing carpeting, then leveled the concrete slab floor using Bostik SL-150 Self Leveling underlayment. And then we installed the 2 1/4″ wide unfinished, plain sawn / slice cut, engineered Red Oak flooring by Maxwell (Townsend Additions line) using Bostik Pro Cure adhesive.

Our crew sanded the new Red Oak flooring, then finished it with durable Pallmann products one coat of Pallmann Pall-X Color, color sealer. We followed up with 2 coats of Pallmann Pall-X Power finish water borne polyurethane, in ultra matte.

Screen and Coat is a good maintenance procedure to protect your wood floors. When we “screen and coat” wood flooring, we use a buffer and a mesh screen covered with an abrasive, instead of regular sand paper discs. Screening provides lighter abrasion to the floor finish, providing a good roughness that helps the new finish coat of polyurethane adhere properly. We recommend screening and coating wood floors that get normal use on a 5 year cycle, to restore the finish and protect the wood flooring. We screened and coated 1,200 square feet of the plain sawn / slice cut Red Oak flooring with Walnut inlays in this home. Our crew applied water based polyurethane finish; Pallmann‘s Pall-X Power finish water borne polyurethane.

FSC Certified Hickory Flooring Install – Palencia Country Club

FSC Certified Hickory flooring - installedOur clients selected a FSC certified Hickory flooring by Tesoro woods for their home in the Palencia Golf and Country Club community in St. Augustine.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is the hardest approval stamp to achieve for wood flooring. The FSC certification “ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits”.

The concrete slab subfloor of the home required a lot of leveling prior to installing the Hickory wood floor. Our crew began work by leveling the slab with Bostik SL – 150, Self Leveling Underlayment.

The FSC certified Hickory flooring has an incredible color – “Vintage Gatehouse – Desert”, which is slightly grey with natural undertones. We installed the flooring with Bostik ProCure Urethane adhesive.

Installing French/German White Oak Flooring in Ponte Vedra Beach

Forest Accents Ardesia XWA Ponte Vedra Beach homeowner contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to install 1,500 square feet of White Oak flooring in their home.

Our client selected 7 1/2″ wide, engineered French/German White Oak (Ardesia XW) wood flooring, made by Forest Accents, from their Euro Textures line.

As can be seen in the following photos, we did a massive amount of leveling on the concrete slab subfloor prior to this wood flooring installation.

Our crew used Bostik Pro Cure adhesive to accomplish the French/German White Oak flooring installation.

We finished this flooring project out with shoe molding to match the baseboard. A hallway was installed on the diagonal, for added visual effect. And our crew also sanded, stained and refinished the lower existing stair tread to match the new wood flooring.

Wire Brushed White Oak Wood Flooring Install – Neptune Beach

Dan’s Floor Store clients include home and condo owners, business owners, as well as new construction building contractors and home improvement renovators.

For this wood flooring project, we were working with a local home builder on a new home in Neptune Beach. The builder provided 950 square feet of character grade, wire brushed White Oak wood flooring, with a machine sculpted top of 4 mm for our crew to install.

Before installing the wood flooring, we had to level the concrete subfloor. And this slab required a large amount of leveler to achieve a flat surface for the wire brushed White Oak flooring.

At Dan’s Floor Store, we pride ourselves on our subfloor leveling prowess. Leveling the subfloor is an important step; the flat surface minimizes damage to the installed wood flooring and maximizes the flooring life.

Our crew used flooring straps to keep the wood flooring planks tightly together while installing them. For these super wide plank White Oak boards, the flooring straps were very helpful. And we used Bostik’s Pro-Cure adhesive for this application.

Prefinished Birch Wood Flooring Installation – World Golf Village

Installed handscraped prefinished birch wood flooringReplacing existing carpeting with wood flooring is an improvement project that increases the value of a home, a condo, or a business.

As part of this home improvement project for this World Golf Village condo, we replaced existing carpeting with prefinished birch wood flooring.

The first step was removing 700 square feet of carpeting from the condo.

Next our Dan’s Floor Store crew leveled the concrete subfloor in the area that had been carpeted. We level the subfloor prior to installing wood floors to create a flat surface, which minimizes damage to the wood and maximizes the wood flooring life.

With the subfloor leveled, we installed the 5″ wide by 3/8″ thick, hand scraped, prefinished Birch wood flooring. as provided by the builder.

Our crew made our own moldings for this project, and did some clean carpet tucks where the wood and carpet in bedrooms met. This job turned out great, and our builder and the homeowner were pleased. And Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients!

Brazilian Pecan Hardwood Flooring Installation – Palencia

Installed Brazilian Pecan hardwood flooringHomeowners in the Palencia community along the west bank of the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Augustine were ready for a new look in their home. They contacted Dan’s Floor Store for their flooring home improvement project – to replace 1,000 square feet of their tile flooring with some exotic wood flooring.

Our clients chose a 5 1/4″ by 1/2″ thick engineered Brazilian Pecan hardwood flooring with a “chocolate” stain by Triangulo for their new wood floor. This wood flooring, like most Brazilian specie, has a large amount of variation from plank to plank. It makes a wild looking, beautiful floor.

First our Dan’s Floor Store crew had to remove the old tile flooring.

A large amount of cuts had to be made prior to the tile being removed.

Checking moisture content of the concrete slab subfloor, we found the tile had been set prior to the slab being fully cured. So next we leveled the concrete slab, applying Bostik Universal Primer and then Bostik SL-150 Leveling Compound. To protect the wood flooring we were about to install for this project, we abated the moisture in the slab with Bostik’s MVP (Moisture Vapor Protection).

We installed the Brazilian Pecan hardwood flooring with Bostik Greenforce hardwood flooring adhesive. Application of Bostik Greenforce provides additional moisture protection for the new wood flooring, as well as long term adhesive durability.

Our Dan’s Floor Store crew finished out this project by installing floor trim molding around the new Brazilian Pecan hardwood flooring and at the doorways, and then kicked the carpeting back at each of the doorways to the bedrooms.

Weave-in Repair Install Refinish Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine

Completing plywood underlaymentThis job took place in Moultrie Foreside, a community near the water off of US1 on Moultrie Creek in south St. Augustine.

Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to help with a home improvement project involving solid wood flooring with plywood subfloor underneath it.

The home had already existing Red Oak select grade flooring, all running on a diagonal in the upper level. Our clients were re-doing their whole kitchen and connecting on in the lower living room but we are knocking out an old existing bedroom to enlarge the open space.

We put down our vapor membrane when installing the plywood base for the new Red Oak flooring, using our Hilti DX2 nail guns.

Next our crew installed the solid Red Oak select grade wood flooring.

Adding Red Oak to finish the transition and steps between upper and lower floors.

There was a massive amount of weave-in repair work in the wood flooring for this job, as evidenced in the photos. Also the floor running on a diagonal had to come around and meet up. There was a room with a fireplace where we did a weave-in repair, as well as repairing some old pet damage to the wood flooring in the center of the living room. The lower floor had 3 inch wide Red Oak select flooring. The upper floor was 2 1/4 inch wide Red Oak select. Both sizes of Red Oak select wood flooring were provided by Oak Crest Lumber.

Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work is done in compliance with National Wood Flooring Association standards, in order to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. As one example of NWFA practices, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.

We needed to give the new solid Red Oak wood floors time to acclimate before sanding and finishing them, and sanding and refinishing the repaired Red Oak floors. We will give the new wood floors about month to acclimate, and then return and finish this project.
