Wire Brushed Oak Flooring Installation – Nocatee

Snow Cap wire brushed White Oak flooring by Naturally Aged Flooring. This Dan’s Floor Store wire brushed Oak flooring residential installation project took place in a home in the Twenty Mile Village community in Nocatee. Florida.

The first phase of this project was removing all of the floor tile from the kitchen area, and all of the carpeting in the home.

Next we had to level the entire concrete slab subfloor after (as is our standard practice) checking for any moisture issues since it was a new poured slab. (The moisture content of the slab dictates the selection of leveling material used for the job. Moisture coming up from the concrete subfloor can damage wood flooring.)

We had to do quite an extensive amount of leveling on this job. Some leveling areas show up in the wood flooring installation photos that follow. Having a level surface for a wood flooring installation prevents damage to the wood flooring and helps the wood flooring last much longer.

Our clients selected an engineered, wire brushed, White Oak wood flooring made by Naturally Aged flooring, called Snow Cap. This wire brushed Oak flooring is 1/2″ thick x 7 1/2″ wide and comes in random lengths, from 2′ to 6′, with white stain within the soft wood grain. From the Naturally Aged Flooring photo of this character grade White Oak flooring, you can see it has a natural looking white tone without so much character in the flooring to make it look too rustic.

Our clients are very pleased with their new wire brushed Oak flooring installation, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients.

Character Grade White Oak Flooring – Install, Sand and Finish – Crescent Beach

Stained and finished character grade White Oak flooringOne home improvement that can increase the value of your home or business is replacing the carpeting that was originally installed with wood flooring. Replacing original carpeting with wood floors can also help reduce the allergic symptoms of those who live or work in the building.

And if your home or business already has wood flooring, refinishing an older, worn wood floor can increase its selling price by improving the appearance of your property.

Dan’s Floor Store both installs wood floors and refinishes wood floors (and we do some nice tile work, too).

This job was a 2600 square foot install, sand and finish character grade White Oak flooring project for our Dan’s Floor Store crew. This project home was in Crescent Beach, Florida. Also we installed thirty-two, 54″ wide White Oak stair treads and stained them to match.

The species used in this project was a character grade White Oak flooring, 7 1/2″ x 9/16″.

This home is on the ocean. While working this flooring project, we also enjoyed the beautiful views of the beckoning Atlantic.

We cut the stairs in with a stair jig, which is shown in one of the following photos. Also we sanded and stained the treads to match the White Oak stair railing.

The color we used for the stain was Golden Brown DuraSeal mixed with neutral DuraSeal 50-50 mix. Then we coated the job with the Bona Mega extra mat waterborne polyurethane for the first two coats and finished the final coat with a topcoat of Bona Traffic HD extra matte.

And the homeowners agreed, this turned out to be a beautiful wood floor and stairway project.

Wire-Brushed Oak Hardwood Flooring Install – St. Augustine

If you are thinking about improvements to your home or business involving wood or vinyl flooring or tile work, call Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation and estimate.

That’s what a couple living in southwest St. Augustine, Florida did. They wanted to replace their existing flooring with new wood flooring. They chose engineered, wire-brushed Oak hardwood flooring, 9 3/4″ wide by 5/8″ thick in random lengths by Naturally Aged Flooring – “Santa Cruz” for their new wood floors.

First we removed over 2,700 square feet of their existing flooring. Wood flooring requires a flat surface to minimize damage to the wood and maximize the flooring life. The concrete slab subfloor in this home required a lot of leveling, as you can see in these photos.

With the subfloor leveling completed, we installed the new wire-brushed Oak hardwood flooring. We matched the thresholds/”t” molding to the new wood flooring, and also did some baseboard work and new shoe molding.

This wood flooring project took about two weeks, and the new hardwood floors are really beautiful throughout.  Our clients were very happy with their new wire-brushed Oak hardwood flooring, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients.

Engineered Maple Flooring Replacing Tile – Palencia

Palencia Golf and Country Club community homeowners called Dan’s Floor Store for our free consultation and estimate. They wanted to replace 1600 square feet of tile flooring that had been originally installed in their home with wood flooring. Home improvements can often improve the value of a home, as well as make it more enjoyable for the owners.

Maple flooring installedOur clients chose an engineered maple flooring made by Mirage; 6 1/4″ X 1/2″called Maple Peppermint, it has a grey color and is a very beautiful flooring.

Mirage is one of the best brands of engineered wood flooring in the industry. It is FSC certified wood flooring. The FSC stamp is the hardest stamp to get on wood flooring, because FSC is the Forestry Stewardship Council. That means that all of the wood comprised in the Mirage engineering wood flooring is eco sound and compliant to the highest standards.

Our crew had a lot of floor tile to remove. We put plastic film over cabinets and appliances, to protect them during tile removal.

Then we leveled the concrete slab sub floor. A level surface helps wood flooring last longer.

After leveling the slab we also had to seal the concrete with Bostik’s MVP (Moisture Vapor Protection) prior to installation. Sealer was required because the slab had tile put on it before it was fully cured. Not letting the concrete slab cure before installing tile traps the moisture between slab and tile. Dan’s Floor Store understands how this trapped moisture can penetrate and damage new wood flooring. It is our practice to check every concrete slab for trapped moisture prior to installation.

With the sub floor leveled, the installation of the engineered maple flooring progressed smoothly.

Needless to say this maple flooring job turned out really beautiful! Our clients were very pleased with the new look that the maple wood floors gave their home. And Dan’s Floor Store likes having happy clients!

Walnut-Pegged Red Oak Plank Flooring Install – Finish – St. Augustine

This article is about the completion of a wood floor project in a home located in the Davis Shores community in St. Augustine, Florida. The project was a result of the damaged caused by flooding during hurricane Matthew, in the fall of 2016.

Behind the home is the waterfront of Mantanzas Bay. The home sits just across the Bay from Castillo de San Marco..

These homeowners had called Dan’s Floor Store because they wanted to have the wood floors in their home restored to look like the Walnut-pegged Red Oak plank flooring that they enjoyed having before the storm. The old wood floors had been water damaged by the hurricane and had to be removed.

In the previous Dan’s Floor Store article on this project, we had drilled the red oak planks for the walnut pegs, and installed the red oak plank flooring. After the flooring was installed, we waited over a month to allow the solid wood flooring to acclimate.

Then we inserted all the 3/4″ Walnut pegs, gluing them into their previously drilled holes in the Red Oak plank flooring.

The next step in this installation was sanding the new Walnut-pegged Red Oak plank flooring.

Then we stained the new Red Oak plank flooring with DuraSeal Golden Brown

To protect the Walnut-pegged Red Oak plank flooring, we finished it with Bona oil-modified Woodline satin polyurethane.

Our clients were very happy with their new Red Oak plank floors with Walnut pegs. And Dan’s Floor Store like to have happy clients.

Red Oak Plank Flooring with Walnut Pegs – St. Augustine Install

This wood floor project was another one that resulted from flooding during hurricane Matthew, in the fall of 2016.

The project home is located in the Davis Shores community in St. Augustine, Florida. Behind the home is the waterfront of Mantanzas Bay. The home is sitting just across the water from Castillo de San Marco.

The homeowners called Dan’s Floor Store because they wanted to have the wood floors in their home restored to look like the Red Oak plank floors with Walnut pegs that they enjoyed having before the storm. The old wood floors had been water damaged by the hurricane and had to be removed.

We ordered solid, unfinished select Red Oak plank flooring in random widths from one of our sources. The 4″, 6″, and 8″ wide planks are 3/4″ thick.

The peg pattern in the old wooden floor was unique. We took measurements and made some drilling jigs to help us mimic the drill pattern for the 3/4″ holes we needed for installing the Walnut pegs in the new Red Oak flooring.

Our Dan’s Floor Store crew drilled all the peg holes in the Red Oak plank flooring.

Here are some photos taken as we installed the new solid Red Oak wood flooring.

Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work complies with NWFA standards to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our clients. As an example, when installing solid wood flooring like we did in this project, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet to achieve adequate spacing.

After the flooring was installed, we waited over a month to allow the solid wood flooring to acclimate.

See the stained and finished Red Oak plank flooring with Walnut pegs in our concluding article on this project – Walnut-Pegged Red Oak Plank Flooring Install – Finish – St. Augustine.

Beachy Look White Oak Flooring Installation – St. Augustine

Dan’s Floor Store was called by a previous client living in Davis Shores in St. Augustine, Florida to install some new wood flooring. We had refinished his wood floors, sanding and staining them during our prior visit. Then Hurricane Matthew came through and the floors in his home ended up under 17 inches of water!

His old flooring had to be removed along with the subfloor, drywall, doors and baseboards. All are new because of the hurricane’s water damage.

Beachy look White Oak flooring being installedFor his new wood flooring , our client selected an engineered wood flooring product made by Real Wood Floors, the Vintage Loft collection, color name Foundry.

  • These are 8 1/2inches wide by 5/8inches thick random length planks, up to 7 feet long with 80 percent of lengths to be long boards.
  • It also boasts a 4mm top and has a distinctive look with lines against the grain to add to the already wire brushed texture on this White Oak flooring.

Dan’s Floor Store crew prepared the new plywood subfloor by edging down the seams of the plywood sheets. The edged seams makes it possible for the new wood flooring to lay flat across subfloor. You can see the edged subfloor sheets in in some of the project photos.

We used Bostik’s GreenForce adhesive, a Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) adhesive, for this job.

Dan’s Floor Store uses special flooring straps to hold these White Oak wood planks together during installation, due to the width of the planks.

The White Oak wood flooring in the Foundry color shows shades of grey, silver, and black, to exemplify a beachy modern flooring look.

Our client was very pleased with their new beachy look white oak wood floors. We are glad to have clients that like our work. Many of our previous clients recommend us to their family and friends for wood floor installations, wood floor refinishing, and tile and stone work. Always nice to have clients who appreciate your work and introduce more potential clients to you.

Rift and Quarter Sawn Red Oak Flooring Installation – Ormond Beach

Installed rift and quarter sawn red oak wood flooringDuring a Free Consultation with Dan’s Floor Store, homeowners in Ormond Beach, Florida contracted us to improve their home by installing some rift and quarter sawn Red Oak flooring.

Wood flooring not only looks good but properly installed wood flooring will often increase the value of a home or business during resale.

Our client selected 9/16″ thick by 5″ wide, engineered, straight grain, rift and quarter sawn Red Oak flooring by EcoTimber. Each plank is about 3′ long, and select grade.

We don’t have any photos of removing the existing flooring on this project. On some projects, we start by removing the old carpeting and carpet padding. For some projects, we remove existing tile, or old wood or laminate flooring.

On this project, first we leveled the concrete subfloor. Leveling is an important step. Pad and carpet can hide the unlevel concrete slab, but wood flooring (or tile flooring for that matter) cannot. The concrete or wood subfloor needs to be leveled before hard surface flooring such as wood or tile is installed, to prevent damaging or reducing the useful life of the wood or tile flooring.

Then we started installing the new rift and quarter sawn Red Oak flooring. There were some long runs of wood flooring in this project. The longest run of wood flooring was 70′ long – down the hallway and then into a back room. The new Red Oak flooring really looks nice.

Our clients liked how their new Red Oak wood floors look, and we like having happy clients.

Engineered Birch Flooring Installation – Magnolia Point Country Club

A local construction company who was flipping a home called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to be part of remodeling their project home.

Their project home was located in the Magnolia Point Country Club community in Green Cove Springs, Florida. They wanted engineered Birch flooring installed in the home.

This Magnolia Point Country Club home had long steps or stepped levels of flooring. Our project was to cover about 1300 ft.² of home floor area. The main concrete subfloor and the elevated sections of subfloor all needed to be leveled, in order to prolong the life of the wood flooring that we were about to install. There was a massive amount of leveler used to achieve the level floor surface that we needed for this job.

Our clients selected Gray Fog, 5 inch wide by 3/8 inch thick, hand scraped engineered Birch flooring by Chesapeake Flooring.

We used Bostiks Pro-Cure as an adhesive because there was a great moisture reading. As always, we use a concrete moisture meter to determine if there is moisture in the concrete slab, prior to installing our flooring.

Our builder clients were very pleased with their finished engineered Birch flooring.

Red Oak Wood Floor and Stair Restoration – Avondale

Stained and refinished red oak wood flooring and stair treadsDan’s Floor Store was contracted to refinish and repair 3,800 square feet of Red Oak wood floor and 18 stair treads in a charming old home being renovated in the Avondale community of Jacksonville, Florida.

Here are some photos showing the old wood floors before we started to refinish them. The middle photos shows our new Lagler-Hummel Belt Sanding machine, next to our older one.

They do a good job sanding wood floors.

As part of this Red Oak wood floor refinishing project, we had to remove and replace some damaged areas of the wood flooring, using the weave-in process to achieve a uniform look for the client’s wood floors.

Based on our experience in restoring and repairing wood floors in old homes, we chose rift and quarter sawn Red Oak wood flooring planks by Shamrock Plank Flooring as a good match to the existing wood flooring. We used the Red Oak planks for the weave-in repair, to replace the damaged wood flooring. There were actually many weave-in areas, repairing damaged wood flooring on this project.

After weaving-in the new Red Oak planks, we sanded and hand scraped the floors, the stair treads, and landings.

First our Dan’s Floor Store crew used the technique of applying a little water to “pop” the grain of the wood, prior to applying the stain to the Red Oak wood floor and stair treads. This extra step allows the stain to penetrate deeper, to get a darker, richer stain effect than just using the stain, straight out of the can. Then we applied MinWax stain – blending 2 parts Coffee brown to 1 part medium brown.

We also mimicked the stair tread nosing from the 1950’s by handcrafting and modifying new nosing to achieve a near exact look.

For the finish coat on these floors, we used Bona Mega Clear HD for our first build-up coat. Our crew will be back in a few weeks to put the final two coats on this wood flooring restoration project.

As our Dan’s Floor Store crew was leaving the project home, we just had to catch a few photos of the serene view of the St. Johns River, as seen from behind the project home.
