Sand, Stain, and Finish Wood Flooring at Matthew’s Restaurant in San Marco

Chef Matthew of Matthew’s Restaurant, and Dan DiCarlo, owner of Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 have been friends for over 25 years.

The Restaurant was being closed for a week for renovations under a tight timeline, and Chef Matthew called Dan to refinish (sand, stain, and finish) the bar area Oak wood flooring.

Our crew started work at 5AM, sanding the bar floor with rough paper. Then we sanded the Oak floor with fine paper, hand scraped the corners and palm sanded all the ends to eliminate any sanding marks. Next our crew buffed the job smooth.

To achieve a deep stain, we “popped” the wood flooring grain with water applied with damp cloths.

We applied Bona Ebony stain. Our crew applied durable Pallmann products – one coat of Pallmann clear, followed by one coat of Pallmann Power ultra matte finish.

Two days later, after the bar area had been painted, we buffed down the job and put a final coat of Pallmann 98 ultra matte.

Matthew and his staff were thoroughly pleased with our performance and the beautiful wooden bar floor job we left! And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Sand, White Wash and Finish Maple Flooring and Staircase – Marsh Landing Country Club

White washed look Maple flooringA couple moving to our First Coast from Chicago called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a Free consultation and estimate. The couple had purchased a beautiful home in the Marsh Landing Country Club community. They wanted their solid Maple and engineered Maple (by Mirage) floors sanded and finished, and we got this flooring project!

Our clients also wanted a white wash look for these Maple floors. Maple is a lighter color specie, however the existing maple was super yellowed. This yellowing happens naturally, because Maple has the tendency to yellow with age. Fortunately, as soon as you put the sander on it and start sanding this wood flooring, it goes back to a super light color!

We really like our clients’ concept for these Maple floors. There is a beautiful look to Maple with the white washed look!

Our crew sanded and hand scraped the edges of the Maple flooring.

Our clients also wanted their staircase to have this white washed look. So we sanded and hand scraped the edges of the 25 stairs and risers, and the handrail.

We applied Bona NordicSeal to give the Maple floors and stairway the white washed look. Then we buffed down those first two coats. Our crew finished the Maple floor with two coats of Pallmann Power Ultra Matte. The stair rail was Brazilian Cherry wood, and we coated with the white washing agent many times (five coats) to get it light and non reddish!

The clients were astounded with the transformation of their floors and stairway! And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Refinishing Rotary Peeled Red Oak Flooring in Ponte Vedra Beach

We used a Bona Golden Oak stain. Next our crew applied a Bona oil modified sealer for the first coat. And then we buffed down that coat, and applied two coats of waterborne Pallmann Power ultra matte finish.

Sand and Finish Old Heart Pine Wood Floors – San Marco

A home improvement and renovation project in a San Marco home led to a call to Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to restore the old heart pine wood floors in the home.

Dan’s Floor Store crew has repaired and restored many old wood floors in the Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine, Florida area.

These old heart pine wood floors are circa late 1800s. The wood was very beautiful, and ultra sappy. These old heart pine plank floors had not been refinished in over 100 years!

Old Red Oak Plank Floors Refinished with Grey Stain – Ortega

Refinished, grey stained, red oak plank floorsDan’s Floor Store was contracted to refinish the 1 1/2″ wide solid old Red Oak plank floors in this circa 1950 home in the Ortega neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. As part of the refinishing process, our client described the look they wanted and we recommended adding a grey stain to the Red Oak planks during our refinishing process.

Repair Sand Finish Old Red Oak Flooring – Riverside

During the fall of 2017, many people in the Jacksonville, Florida area were victims of storm rain and flood damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

Sand and Finish Engineered White Oak Flooring and Stairs- Crescent Beach

Beach view from the project home.This home had been damaged during Hurricane Irma, in the fall of 2017.
These Crescent Beach community homeowners (in St. Augustine, Florida) called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to restore their water damaged wood floor and staircase.

During the storm, wind and water came in through the windows and doors of the home. You can see some of the water damaged wood flooring and stairs in these photos.

Our crew began working this project by drying out the wet subfloor with dehumidifiers and high powered fans. Then our crew repaired over 500 square feet of engineered White Oak flooring (weave-in repairs with new White Oak flooring).

To restore the wood flooring and staircase, we sanded and hand scraped the edges of:

  • 2,000 square feet of White Oak flooring
  • 30 stair treads
  • 8 stairway newel posts
  • 80 linear feet of stair railing

The engineered White Oak flooring had a tough aluminum oxide finish. Our crew used a lot of sandpaper to go through all the stages of sanding the wood flooring to prepare it for refinishing.

It takes a lot of sandpaper to remove the tough, aluminum oxide finish on wood flooring.

We applied Bona oil-modified DriFast Sealer to the sanded wood.

Then our crew buffed between each of the next coats and applied Bona Woodline oil-modified, polyurethane Satin finish for a tough protective coat and slight amber color to enhance the natural tone of the wood.

Sand and Finish American Cherry Flooring – St. Augustine, Florida

Refinished American Cherry flooringHomeowners in south St. Augustine, Florida contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to sand and refinish the American Cherry flooring in their home.

American cherry is a rare species to see these days. Most flooring manufacturers stopped making it because of how soft it is, but it is a very beautiful flooring.

They had pre-finished aluminum oxide American Cherry flooring in their home. Aluminum oxide is a very tough finish. It took three cuts with the sander to get all of the old finish off the wood flooring.

Next our crew applied Bona oil-modified DriFast Sealer.

We finished the American Cherry flooring with two coats of Bona oil-modified polyurethane finish for a tough protective coat with a slight amber color to enhance the natural tone of the wood.

Needless to say our clients were very happy with the outcome of their newly sanded and refinished American Cherry floors. And Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients!

Sand and Finish Weave-in Repaired Red Oak Select Grade Flooring – St. Augustine

Weave-in repair of red oak flooringEarlier this year, Dan’s Floor Store started a home improvement project for clients in the Moultrie Foreside community, near Moultrie Creek in south St. Augustine. Our crew prepared the subfloor, and then wove-in solid Red Oak select grade wood flooring to extend the Red Oak through the home, and to repair some damaged areas of the wood flooring.

After allowing one month of acclamation time for the new solid Red Oak select grade flooring, we came back to sand and finish the Red Oak floors.

First, the acclimated wood flooring had to be sanded.

After sanding, our crew “popped” the wood flooring grain with water to give a deeper, darker color when we applied the stain. The stain selected was Early American by MinWax. Then we finished the floors with one coat of Bona drifast Sealer.

And then we waited around a month or so to allow the kitchen cabinets to come in. Next our Dan’s Floor Store crew buffed down the sealer coat on the Red Oak select grade flooring and applied two coats of Bona oil-modified satin.

Weave-in Repair Install Refinish Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine

Completing plywood underlaymentThis job took place in Moultrie Foreside, a community near the water off of US1 on Moultrie Creek in south St. Augustine.

Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 was contracted to help with a home improvement project involving solid wood flooring with plywood subfloor underneath it.

The home had already existing Red Oak select grade flooring, all running on a diagonal in the upper level. Our clients were re-doing their whole kitchen and connecting on in the lower living room but we are knocking out an old existing bedroom to enlarge the open space.

We put down our vapor membrane when installing the plywood base for the new Red Oak flooring, using our Hilti DX2 nail guns.

Next our crew installed the solid Red Oak select grade wood flooring.

Adding Red Oak to finish the transition and steps between upper and lower floors.

There was a massive amount of weave-in repair work in the wood flooring for this job, as evidenced in the photos. Also the floor running on a diagonal had to come around and meet up. There was a room with a fireplace where we did a weave-in repair, as well as repairing some old pet damage to the wood flooring in the center of the living room. The lower floor had 3 inch wide Red Oak select flooring. The upper floor was 2 1/4 inch wide Red Oak select. Both sizes of Red Oak select wood flooring were provided by Oak Crest Lumber.

Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work is done in compliance with National Wood Flooring Association standards, in order to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. As one example of NWFA practices, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.

We needed to give the new solid Red Oak wood floors time to acclimate before sanding and finishing them, and sanding and refinishing the repaired Red Oak floors. We will give the new wood floors about month to acclimate, and then return and finish this project.
