Weave-in Repair Install Refinish Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine

Completing plywood underlaymentThis job took place in Moultrie Foreside, a community near the water off of US1 on Moultrie Creek in south St. Augustine.

Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to help with a home improvement project involving solid wood flooring with plywood subfloor underneath it.

The home had already existing Red Oak select grade flooring, all running on a diagonal in the upper level. Our clients were re-doing their whole kitchen and connecting on in the lower living room but we are knocking out an old existing bedroom to enlarge the open space.

We put down our vapor membrane when installing the plywood base for the new Red Oak flooring, using our Hilti DX2 nail guns.

Next our crew installed the solid Red Oak select grade wood flooring.

Adding Red Oak to finish the transition and steps between upper and lower floors.

There was a massive amount of weave-in repair work in the wood flooring for this job, as evidenced in the photos. Also the floor running on a diagonal had to come around and meet up. There was a room with a fireplace where we did a weave-in repair, as well as repairing some old pet damage to the wood flooring in the center of the living room. The lower floor had 3 inch wide Red Oak select flooring. The upper floor was 2 1/4 inch wide Red Oak select. Both sizes of Red Oak select wood flooring were provided by Oak Crest Lumber.

Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work is done in compliance with National Wood Flooring Association standards, in order to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. As one example of NWFA practices, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.

We needed to give the new solid Red Oak wood floors time to acclimate before sanding and finishing them, and sanding and refinishing the repaired Red Oak floors. We will give the new wood floors about month to acclimate, and then return and finish this project.

Weave-in Repair Red Oak Flooring, Sand and Finish – Eagle Harbor

A contractor we had worked with previously called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to help with a home improvement project they were doing on a home in the Eagle Harbor neighborhood in Fleming Island, Florida.

The contractor was remodeling the kitchen area of the home. The scope of their project included knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the living room, opening up the space. So they called Dan’s Floor Store to weave-in repair Red Oak flooring in the home.

For a weave-in repair, we install planks of wood flooring to fill in gaps in the flooring left when the wall and kitchen cabinets were removed. Our weave-in repair will create a continuous appearance to the wood flooring.

Between the subfloor laid bare by the kitchen redesign, and the removed wall between the kitchen and the living room, we wove approximately 200 boards into the existing rotary peeled Red Oak wood flooring.

After all of our weave-in repair red oak flooring work was completed, our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded and finished the floor.

We used oil-modified Bona DriFast Sealer for the first coat. Then we followed up with durable Bona Traffic HD matte for the final coats.

When we finished this project, the homeowner and our contractor loved the workmanship and how good the Red Oak floor looked. And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Water Damaged Pine Floor Refinishing – Historic St. Augustine

Owners of a home in historic St. Augustine, called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation on their water damaged pine wood floor. The home is located just south of the Bridge of Lions, on the Avineda Menendez, which is right on the Mantanzas riverfront.

In the fall of 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused water damage to the wood floor in this and many other homes in St. Augustine that are near the water.

After looking at their water damaged pine floor, we told the homeowners their old pine floors could be saved. Our Dan’s Floor Store crew could repair and refinish them for years more useful life.

This is the fifth home on this street in which we have refinished the wooden floors, after they were water warped and damaged by hurricane Matthew.

Getting an early start on the day’s work, our crew was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise over the Mantanzas riverfront.

The project home has one room with a floor of Southern Yellow Pine. A majority of the wooden floors were Heart Pine, original from circa late 1800s. We had to repair several areas of wood flooring. Our Dan’s Floor Store team began sanding the wooden floors at a 45 degree angle to the grain several times to get them flat again. After we had the wood floors flat, we sanded them with the grain to prepare them for finishing.

We added an orange tint stain to the repaired areas, to get them to visually match the adjacent Heart Pine flooring.

To finish and protect these old pine wood floors, our crew first applied a coat of oil modified Bona DriFast Sealer Then we applied two coats or Bona Woodline Polyurethane for a tough protective coat with a slight amber tone.

Our clients were very happy to see how nice their old pine wood floors look now. And Dan’s Floor Store loves to have happy clients!

Reclaimed Heart Pine Flooring Repair & Refinishing – St. Augustine, FL

Saltwater Cowboys, a popular barbecue and seafood restaurant in St. Augustine, Florida, called Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation and estimate for repairing their wood floors.

Hurricane Matthew that came through our area in northeastern Florida in the fall of 2016 did a lot of damage to local homes and businesses, including Saltwater Cowboys.

During the storm, Saltwater Cowboys got inundated during hurricane Matthew which happened to many homes and businesses in areas of Saint Augustine close to the river or intracoastal waterway. And this restaurant is sitting directly on the intracoastal.

The flooring that was existing at the restaurant was reclaimed Heart Pine. The original reclaimed Heart Pine flooring planks were tongue and groove joints, 7 1/2 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches thick.

Only some of the original Heart Pine flooring was able to be reused with the full tongue and groove. The remainder of the original reclaimed Heart Pine flooring was ripped down into 6 inch wide boards. These ripped-down boards did not have any tongue and groove.

As a result of the hurricane damage, Saltwater Cowboys had to go through a massive restoration including a new subfloor, new joists, new decks and many other new items, but they were able to reuse at least some of their flooring.

Among the repairs to be able to open Saltwater Cowboys after the storm, the owners had to replace all of the beams underneath the building. Seeing an opportunity among so much damage and destruction, they re-used the old Heart Pine beams, having them milled and re-planed into 1 1/2 ” thick by nearly 10″ wide floor planks!

The method that we used for installing the planks of reclaimed Heart Pine flooring was to glue and nail all the flooring in place.

The reclaimed Heart Pine plank flooring of varied lengths and widths looks great installed.

Yikes! It doesn’t take a lot of water to damage a wood floor!

Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to repair some water damaged Hickory wood flooring at the Beachcomber condos in St. Augustine, Florida. Beachcomber is in a very scenic location, with a super view of the Atlantic Ocean.

There were several areas of Hickory flooring that were damaged and needed to be removed.

In all, we removed approximately 45 water damaged Hickory boards from the floor.

After we were sure the subfloor was thoroughly dried out, we wove in the new hand scraped Hickory Natural pre-finished engineered hardwood flooring from Naturally Aged wood flooring.

Refinishing Old Heart Pine Floors – Springfield

Old heart pine wood flooring refinishedThis Dan’s Floor Store wood floor refinishing project took place in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, in the historic Springfield neighborhood.

The home was circa 1913, with the original flooring, old Heart Pine floors.

Some of the old wood floors were covered with so much paint and carpet glue, they did not resemble wood flooring when our crew arrived on site.

We also refinished the old wooden stair treads.

First some of the old Heart Pine flooring planks were damaged and had to be replaced, using by weaving-in new wood planks.

Following weave-in repairs, we sanded 1225 square feet of the old Heart Pine floors and the stair treads.

Then we finished the wood flooring with 3 coats of Bona Oil Modified Satin to keep the authenticity of this rustic old floor.

This job required lots of sandpaper and time to complete, and the results are stunning! The homeowner was thrilled with the outcome of this Dan’s Floor Store old wood floor refinishing project.

Replacing Water Damaged Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine

Sanded, stained, and refinished red oak plank flooringHomeowners contracted Dan’s Floor Store to replace water damaged red oak flooring after the lower floor of their home took on and was damaged by water during Hurricane Matthew last fall.

The water damaged the subflooring in some areas, as well as the wood flooring. Before we could install the new wood flooring, we tore out 650 square feet of plywood subfloor and water damaged Red Oak (solid) wood flooring. Then our Dan’s Floor Store crew installed new plywood subfloor, with moisture barrier to protect the Red Oak new wood flooring.

For this project, we replaced the water damaged red oak flooring with 2 1/4″ strip unfinished Red Oak number 1 Common by Shamrock Plank Flooring and weaved the new red oak planks into existing, undamaged flooring.

After allowing a few weeks for the new wood flooring to acclimate, we came back to sand and finish the floor.

Our clients took this as an opportunity to give the wood floors and stair treads of their home a new look. They wanted a dark brown color for their floors and stair treads.

First our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded the wood flooring and stair treads in the home.

To achieve the look they wanted, we next popped the grain of the sanded wood. Our crew conditioned floor with wet rags prior to staining. Popping raises the grain of the wood to allow the stain to penetrate deeper in the wood thus making the color ten times darker than stain could be straight out of the can.

To achieve the dark brown wood color for our clients, we used DuraSeal Espresso stain, and it turned out fabulous.

Then, for a durable, long lasting finish, we applied Bona waterborne finishes (Bona Mega Clear HD Satin for first two coats, followed by Bona Traffic Satin for the final coat).

And then we trimmed out the job with new shoe molding and new stain matched thresholds at all exiting doorways.

Our clients were thrilled with the new look of their Red Oak wood floors and stair treads, and Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Red Oak Wood Floor and Stair Restoration – Avondale

Stained and refinished red oak wood flooring and stair treadsDan’s Floor Store was contracted to refinish and repair 3,800 square feet of Red Oak wood floor and 18 stair treads in a charming old home being renovated in the Avondale community of Jacksonville, Florida.

Here are some photos showing the old wood floors before we started to refinish them. The middle photos shows our new Lagler-Hummel Belt Sanding machine, next to our older one.

They do a good job sanding wood floors.

As part of this Red Oak wood floor refinishing project, we had to remove and replace some damaged areas of the wood flooring, using the weave-in process to achieve a uniform look for the client’s wood floors.

Based on our experience in restoring and repairing wood floors in old homes, we chose rift and quarter sawn Red Oak wood flooring planks by Shamrock Plank Flooring as a good match to the existing wood flooring. We used the Red Oak planks for the weave-in repair, to replace the damaged wood flooring. There were actually many weave-in areas, repairing damaged wood flooring on this project.

After weaving-in the new Red Oak planks, we sanded and hand scraped the floors, the stair treads, and landings.

First our Dan’s Floor Store crew used the technique of applying a little water to “pop” the grain of the wood, prior to applying the stain to the Red Oak wood floor and stair treads. This extra step allows the stain to penetrate deeper, to get a darker, richer stain effect than just using the stain, straight out of the can. Then we applied MinWax stain – blending 2 parts Coffee brown to 1 part medium brown.

We also mimicked the stair tread nosing from the 1950’s by handcrafting and modifying new nosing to achieve a near exact look.

For the finish coat on these floors, we used Bona Mega Clear HD for our first build-up coat. Our crew will be back in a few weeks to put the final two coats on this wood flooring restoration project.

As our Dan’s Floor Store crew was leaving the project home, we just had to catch a few photos of the serene view of the St. Johns River, as seen from behind the project home.

Rotary Sawn Red Oak Floor Repair Sand and Stain – Ponte Vedra Beach

Homeowners in Ponte Vedra Beach contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to help renovate the old floors in their home.

  • The home owners wanted to replace the tile in their foyer and carpet in the adjacent home office room with rotary sawn Red Oak wood flooring.
  • They also asked our recommendation for moisture damaged areas of their existing red oak wood flooring.

We started our work on this flooring project by removing the foyer tile and home office carpeting.

Most concrete subfloors require some leveling before we can install wood flooring planks and the subfloor slab in this home was no exception. The leveled surface of the concrete subfloor helps the wood flooring last longer.

We chose engineered, unfinished rotary sawn 2 1/4″ wide Red Oak plank flooring by Howell Hardwood Flooring for the foyer and home office, to perfectly mimic the existing flooring.

The existing wood flooring had a lot of moisture damage from prior pet urine stains so we recommended sanding and staining the new and existing wood flooring for a uniform look through the home. Our crew used a hand scraper to “pull” all the ends of the sanded planks, to eliminate any sanding marks on the wood floors.

We recommended a combination of coastal driftwood and gray stains by Bona for the home’s wood floors. Dan’s Floor Store crew applied three coats of the stain, which really helped to hide the moisture damage to the old wood flooring. We finished these sanded and stained wood floors with Bona Mega Clear HD.

These rotary sawn Red Oak plank floors turned out great; our clients are very happy with them. And Dan’s Floor Store likes having happy clients.
