Refinishing Old Wooden Floors and Stairs in Historic Avondale

Refinishing old wooden floors and stairs to their earlier elegance always gives a little more happiness to the Dan’s Floor Store crew when we are working with historically significant homes. We are helping to preserve our Country’s architectural history.

Home in Historic Avondale neighborhood of Jacksonville, FloridaDan’s Floor store has restored old wood floors in historic homes from Jacksonville to St. Augustine. For this project, we were refinishing wood floors and stair treads in the historic Avondale community of Jacksonville, Florida.

Avondale was developed as an exclusive subdivision of the Riverside neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida in the summer of 1920. Many of the Avondale homes were built in the Mediterranean Revival style.

This wood floor and stairs refinishing project consisted of sanding and refinishing:

– 1750 square feet of old Heart Pine wood flooring upstairs

– face-nailed White Oak flooring that was decoratively bordered by natural Walnut strip downstairs

– one room of old Heart Pine downstairs

– old Heart Pine stair treads

Here are some photos of the old wooden floor and stair treads, before we refinished them.

These are photos taken during sanding, then hand scraping, and finally applying new finish to the old wood floors and stair treads.

After thoroughly sanding all of these wood surfaces, we applied Bona DTS waterborne sealer  for the first coat. Then, after the Bona sealer had thoroughly dried, we applied two coats of Bona Traffic HD satin for the final two coats of finish.

And here are photos of the refinished wooden floors and stair treads. Our clients were very happy with their refinished wood flooring and stair treads. And Dan’s Floor Store is very happy when our clients like our work.

Rotary Sawn Red Oak Floor Repair Sand and Stain – Ponte Vedra Beach

Homeowners in Ponte Vedra Beach contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to help renovate the old floors in their home.

  • The home owners wanted to replace the tile in their foyer and carpet in the adjacent home office room with rotary sawn Red Oak wood flooring.
  • They also asked our recommendation for moisture damaged areas of their existing red oak wood flooring.

We started our work on this flooring project by removing the foyer tile and home office carpeting.

Most concrete subfloors require some leveling before we can install wood flooring planks and the subfloor slab in this home was no exception. The leveled surface of the concrete subfloor helps the wood flooring last longer.

We chose engineered, unfinished rotary sawn 2 1/4″ wide Red Oak plank flooring by Howell Hardwood Flooring for the foyer and home office, to perfectly mimic the existing flooring.

The existing wood flooring had a lot of moisture damage from prior pet urine stains so we recommended sanding and staining the new and existing wood flooring for a uniform look through the home. Our crew used a hand scraper to “pull” all the ends of the sanded planks, to eliminate any sanding marks on the wood floors.

We recommended a combination of coastal driftwood and gray stains by Bona for the home’s wood floors. Dan’s Floor Store crew applied three coats of the stain, which really helped to hide the moisture damage to the old wood flooring. We finished these sanded and stained wood floors with Bona Mega Clear HD.

These rotary sawn Red Oak plank floors turned out great; our clients are very happy with them. And Dan’s Floor Store likes having happy clients.

New Hickory Wood Flooring and Refinished Stairs in Glen Kernan

After one of our Dan’s Floor Store free consultations, we were contracted to remove some of the old flooring and install new wood flooring in a home in the Glen Kernan Country Club community of Jacksonville, Florida.

Glen Kernan is a gated Country Club community, sitting in 600 acres of scenic, natural beauty near the Intracoastal waterway. There were some gorgeous scenes of nature to be seen during this job.

Home improvements like wood flooring and tile work can be a good investment to improve the overall appearance and value of a home.

Our crew removed 2500 square feet of mostly tile and wood flooring.

Prior to installing the new wood flooring, we leveled the concrete slab subfloor.

The client selected random width, hand scraped, pre-finished Bella Cera Hickory wood flooring for the new look for their home.

We also sanded, hand scraped, and refinished the staircase and landing to match the new Hickory wood flooring, as part of this home improvement project.

Screen and Tung Oil Recoat Oak Floors in Ponte Vedra Beach

Dan’s Floor Store works hard to make sure our client is happy with our wood flooring services and tile and stone services. We are very pleased and thankful that a lot of our business comes from repeat customers and clients’ referrals.

Red and White Oak wood floor, sanded and refinished with Tung oilDan’s Floor Store installed these wood floors in a home in Magnolia Hammock, off Neck Road in Ponte Vedra Beach many years ago. We used a mix of Red and White Oak, 100 year old reclaimed wood by Carlisle in varied widths; 5″, 6″, and 8″. The new wood flooring was then sanded and finished natural with four coats of Tung oil.

Our clients called us back to screen and recoat their wood floor with Tung oil. Periodic refinishing is a maintenance service for quality wood floors.

 

Tung oil comes from the Tung tree, and is the only coating we know of that is impermeable to water. It gives a natural, long-lasting finish to wood floors, and is environmentally friendly.

We found some pet stains in the clients’ floor. We scraped and sanded them out, then built up that area with a few coats of Tung oil.

Next we screened (sanded) the floor. And we finished the floor with two new coats of Tung oil.

These refinished Red and White Oak wood floors look great and Tung oil will keep them looking good for many more years.

Refinishing Old Solid Red Oak Wood Floors in St. Augustine for a Beachy Look

View of St. Augustine Lighthouse.The homeowner wanted the very old clear grade solid Red Oak wood floors from the 1950s/60s in their home refinished with a modern coastal look.

The home is located near the St. Augustine Amphitheater and very close to the lighthouse.

Here are some photos of the old, clear grade solid Red Oak wood flooring in the client’s home. You can see a water damaged areas in clearly in some of the photos.

First we sanded the drab old wood floors. The first photo shows all of the machinery we used for this project. You can see our sanders and the commercial vacuum that we attach to collect the sanding dust. The second photo shows an area of the sanded old Red Oak flooring near the doorway. The third photo shows our floor sander vacuum sanding the floor. The last photo in this group shows how we used a hand scraper to “pull” all the ends of the sanded planks, to eliminate any sanding marks on the wood floors. The sanding work on this job was absolutely impeccable!

Our crew used a collection of Bona products for this project. We used a Classic Gray stain to create the beachy look. Then our crew finished these wood floors with two coats of Bona mega clear HD satin – and a final coat of Bona Traffic satin.

As you could see in several areas of the old solid Red Oak wood floor before we sanded it, some areas had water stains. Those water stains were very hard to see after the wood floor had been stained and refinished.

The homeowners were absolutely thrilled with the way their floors looked. Dan’s Floor Store works hard on each and every project to have happy customers.

Parquet Wood Floor Refinishing in Ortega Forest

Parquet wood floor refinishing for a DIY project?

Some DIY (Do It Yourself) projects sound and look a lot easier than they turn out to be. You read descriptions of the project in a magazine or listen to a friend describe it, or see a few YouTube videos and it looks like something you could do yourself, while learning a new skill. And you get that feeling of accomplishment. Sometimes it works like that, but not all DIY projects work out the way you intended.

Owners of a home over in Ortega Forest, off US 17, on the west side of the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida planned to sand, stain, and refinish their parquet wood flooring as a DIY project.

Parquet refers to detailed woodblock flooring, made of short pieces of hardwood. Parquet floors are installed arranged in a decorative pattern, to create a mosaic look. The woodblocks can be made from solid wood or can be engineered wood.

After the homeowners had invested their time and energy into the project, they were not satisfied with how the floor turned out. They called Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation and estimate to professionally refinish their parquet wood flooring.

Refinishing Heart Pine Wood Flooring in Jacksonville Beach

This was a commercial wood floor refinishing project. We were contracted to refinish the old solid heart pine wood floors in the Playgarden; a place for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners to explore, grow, and create in south Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Their solid heart pine wood floors were scuffed and worn from the beach sand and the traffic of little shoes; ready for refinishing.

Heart Pine is the heartwood of the long leaf pine tree, and is very hard and strong, with beautiful coloring and figure patterns.

First we sanded the floors. You can start to see the charming character of these solid heart pine wood floors reappear after the first pass of our sander on the flooring.

After sanding the floors, we applied Bona IntenseSeal to develop the deep, natural tone, pigmentation, and color characteristics of the Heart Pine wood.

Then we finished the floors with two coats of Bona Mega Clear HD Satin, which eliminates the amber tint that occurs with some finishes, and increases the physical performance of these final layers of finish.

Our clients at the Playgarden were delighted with the refreshed look of their old wood floors, and we always like to have happy clients.

White Oak Wood Floor Refinished with a Custom Stain on Anastasia Island

Dan’s Floor Store refinishes old wood floors to look like new, or as a part of achieving a different look in a room, or both.

A client wanted their 2 1/4″ wide solid White Oak wood floor refinished with a custom stain to achieve a different look in their home on Anastasia Island in St. Augustine, Florida.

We started this project by sanding the wood flooring.

Details are important in achieving good results. When Dan’s Floor Store refinishes a wood floor we perform a step called “pulling the ends” of the wood plank floors. For this step, we hand scrape the edges of the floor where the edger sanded, to achieve a full fresh surface for the wood flooring.

To achieve the look the client wanted for their wood floor, we rubbed the floor with water to “pop” (open up) the wood grain. Popping the wood grain allows super pigmented stains to stay in the wood, rather than being pulled off when a water based finish is applied. The stain color we created for the client was a custom color; a blend of DuraSeal Classic Gray and DuraSeal Country White.

We finished the custom stained White Oak wood floor with durable Bona finishes. First our crew applied Bona Mega Clear HD which eliminates the amber tint achieved with some finishes. And then we applied a final finish coat of Bona Traffic HD.

The custom stain achieved the look that the client wanted, and they were very happy with their refinished floor.

Refinishing clear grade solid Red Oak flooring in Jacksonville

For this project, the clients in a home on University Boulevard in Jacksonville just needed about 500 square feet of old clear grade solid Red Oak wood floors sanded and refinished. Clear grade Red Oak is a mostly heartwood flooring. Clear grade allows all the natural heartwood color variations with minimal character marks and limited color variation. –  National Wood Flooring Association (nwfa).

First we thoroughly sanded the wood floor.

We finished the Red Oak flooring with Bona Mega Clear HD for improved chemical resistance and increased scuff and scratch resistance.

The old clear grade solid Red Oak floors look good again. Our clients were very pleased with their refinished wood floor.

Refinishing Old Wood Floors and Stairs in Historic Springfield

Dan’s Floor store has restored old wood floors in homes in historic St. Augustine, and for this project, we were refinishing wood floors in the historic Springfield community of Jacksonville, Florida.

Actually, the Springfield Historic District is a neighborhood located to the north of downtown Jacksonville. Established in 1869, Springfield is one of only three federally designated historic districts in Jacksonville, the other historic districts being Riverside/Avondale and Old Ortega.

Dan’s Floor Store refinished old face nailed solid Quarter Sawn solid White Oak wood floors (downstairs) and solid Heart Pine wood floors (upstairs).

Here are some photos of the condition of these old wood floors and stairs when we arrived at the client’s home.

We used the buffer before coating and in between coats of finish to abrade the wood flooring for proper bonding. Stair treads need to be edged twice, scraped and then palm sanded prior to coating.

Here you can see some edger work on Quarter Sawn White Oak wood flooring in the kitchen. We use the radiator edger to get under cabinets, back to the toe kicks.

And these photos show the refinished wood floors. We took some of the photos with the same views as we took the “before” photos above, so you can see how good these restored floors look now.
