Refinishing Old Wood Floors in St. Nicholas area of Jacksonville

Dan’s Floor Store refinished some old solid Red Oak plank wood floors as part of a home renovation in the Saint Nicholas neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, just off of Atlantic Boulevard.

The home had been built in the 1950s and was being updated by Howard Construction of Orange Park.

Every old wood floor refinishing project starts with a free consultation and evaluation of the condition of the existing wood floors.

These “before” photos of the old Red Oak wood floors in the home show how worn and damaged the floors were; they were in terrible condition, but we could refinish them to look like new. Some of the old flooring even appeared to have the original wax still on it.

First we thoroughly sanded the solid Red Oak wood floors to remove the old finish and wear damage.

After sanding these old wood floors, we applied a Minwax Red Oak stain. Then we applied three coats of Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish.

We also refinished an area of old pine wood flooring in the lower level of the home, using the same Minwax Red Oak stain, followed by Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish to give a continuous appearance to the wood flooring in the home.

Refinishing Old Heart Pine Floors in St. Augustine

Elegant antique solid Heart Pine wood floor after restorationAmong the many historic attractions in St. Augustine, Florida, there are some elegant old homes which reflect their own special charm. Some are public venues while others remain private residences.

We have been part of restoring several of these fine old St. Augustine private homes by refinishing their stately wood flooring to their earlier appearance.

Every project is unique; some wood floors just need to be sanded and refinished, while other wood floors have been damaged to such extent that a portion must be replaced. And then some clients want their old wood flooring replaced with something different.

Following our free consultation and estimate, Dan’s Floor Store was recently contracted to sand and refinish the 70 plus year old solid Heart Pine wood floors in one of these elegant old homes.

These photos show the old Heart Pine flooring prior to refinishing. In one photo, you can see the attractive Heart Pine wood revealed again as we are sanding the floors in one room of the home.

These photos show how remarkable these antique Heart Pine floors look after we carefully sanded and refinished them with Bona Traffic Natural satin. These refinished floors look good again and are ready for more years of service.

Refinishing Wood Floors for a Beach House Look

Stained and refinished Red Oak floor for the beach house lookFollowing one of our Free consultations about the condition of their floors and what the homeowners wanted to accomplish, Dan’s Floor Store was given the job of refinishing two wood floors in a home in Atlantic Beach, Florida.

The clients wanted to achieve more of a “beach house look” in their home. We could refinish their existing wood flooring as part of renovations to achieve this look.

They had some nice Red Oak flooring installed in one area of their home.

This is how the Red Oak floor looked, prior to staining and refinishing.

And this is how the Yellow Pine Kitchen floor looked, prior to staining and refinishing.

To get the “beach house look” that the clients’ wanted, we sanded the floors and then applied water to “pop” the grain of the wood (to allow the stain to penetrate deeper into the wood grain).

We stained the floors with a mixture of two parts white to one part classic gray. Then we applied the finishing coating of polyurethane to protect the wood floors so they will continue to look good for years.

Wood Floor Repair and Refinishing in Jacksonville

exposed sub-floor prior to weave-in wood floor repairFollowing one of our free consultations, Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to repair the Red Oak wood flooring in a Jacksonville home as part of a renovation project.

This home has a beautiful view of the St. Johns river, and is located near University Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard.

As part of the renovation work, the existing kitchen and a wall were removed, leaving a large hole in the existing wood flooring. Dan’s Floor Store skills in wood floor repair can help make this wood floor look beautiful again.

To fill this exposed area of subfloor, we installed new 1 1/2″ solid Red Oak plank flooring, weaving each piece into existing planks of the old wood floors. Slightly over 100 of the new planks were woven-in to repair the floors in this home. A weave-in wood floor repair is a little more difficult than installing new wood plank flooring, and more routine weave-in repairs usually involve fewer planks to added.

It’s good practice to allow the wood flooring to sit and acclimate for two weeks prior to starting the refinishing phase of the project – sanding and finishing these floors.

Several weeks later we began the next phase of this project.

This solid inch and a half strip Red Oak flooring had some cupping to it so we had to sand it at a 45 degree angle, just like we do with all new solid wood flooring. Sanding wood flooring at a 45 degree angle helps to flatten the floor surface, so that we can “cut” (sand) the floor straight with rough grit paper.

A neutral DuraSeal stain was chosen for this floor to compliment the dark cherry color cabinets to be installed. Two coats of water based polyurethane were applied, followed by a final coat of Bona Traffic satin when the remainder of the renovation work in the home was completed.

Here are some photos of the final kitchen, with new Kitchen Cabinets and Island installed by Horn Builders. Everyone likes how the new darker finished cabinets and island are set off by the lighter wood flooring.

Removing the kitchen wall resulted in a much roomier kitchen, and gave the clients the open floor plan appearance that they wanted.

Wood Flooring Refinish and Repair in Jacksonville Beach

Dan’s Floor Store was selected to refinish the wood floors in this home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

In addition to refinishing the wood floors, there was a section of flooring that had to be replaced; a 50 board, weave-in repair. We also installed some nice vinyl plank flooring in the upstairs master bedroom suite.

These photos show us preparing for and during the refinishing phase of this project.

The client chose the Classic Gray stain by DuraSeal for the 2 1/4″ solid Red Oak flooring downstairs. We applied Bona Traffic polyurethane (a commercial-rated, waterborne finish) coating to protect the wood floor, in a satin sheen.

We agree that our client’s selection, the Classic Gray stain by DuraSeal, conveys a very beachy look; very fitting for the location of the home, just steps away from the Beach.

At Dan’s Floor Store, we enjoy helping clients save some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Wood Floor Repair, Sand, and Stain in Ponte Vedra Florida

Refinished (sanded and stained) solid Red Oak wood floorWe were invited out to a home in TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida to provide one of our free professional consultations concerning their wood floors.

The clients wanted to renovate their home with darker wood floors and stairway, and wanted our insight on a water damaged area of wood flooring in their home.

  • Rather than replacing their wood floors, we recommended sanding and staining them, and repairing the damaged area of wood flooring.

This project presented a large area of wood flooring to be sanded and stained, in addition to the area of wood flooring to be repaired.

In the damaged flooring area, the plywood sub-floor and the solid wood flooring had to be removed and the concrete dried out before the new plywood could be installed followed by new 3 1/4 inch solid Red Oak wood flooring.

The staircase treads had been the natural color of the wood floor, with white risers to the treads. The stair treads and risers would need to be sanded and stained as part of this project.

The customers selected a DuraSeal in Antique Brown for their floors and staircase.

A satin waterborne Bona Traffic polyurethane was used for coating.

This was a large scale flooring project, and after it was finished, it looked great and it was a fun one to work on! We enjoy helping clients save some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Brazilian Cherry Wood Floor Refinishing in St. Augustine

Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to sand and refinish the wood floors in a home in Saint Augustine, Florida, near the marsh on Anastasia Island. We refinished all of the wood flooring in the home, some of which was Brazilian Cherry wood flooring, as featured in this article.

We sanded the wood floors, and finished them with three coats of polyurethane Bona Mega Clear Satin.

Between coats of finish, we screened (lightly sanded, not touching the actual wood) the floors to result in a smoother, thicker, deeper and richer looking protective polyurethane coating.

The Sanded, Screened and Recoated wood floors (including these Brazilian Cherry Wood floors) looked great and our clients were very pleased to see the results. We enjoy helping clients save some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Screening and Recoating Wood Floors and Stairs in Epping Forest

Beautiful Wood Floor after screening and re-coatingDan’s Floor Store was called to an elegant two story home in Epping Forest, for one of our Free consultations. We were asked if their 2,300 square feet of wood flooring should be refinished or replaced.

After inspecting the floors with the clients, we recommended a process called Screening and Recoating, a refinishing procedure for wood flooring that helps it last even longer. Based on our recommendation, the client asked us to also refinish the stair treads, for a refreshed look through their home.

From our experience, the finish on most wood floors has been scuffed by normal use after 3 to 5 years. Our Screening and Re-coating process restores the finish to like new, to last another 3 to 5 years.

The “Screening” process sands the wood flooring with clog-resistant sanding disks, removing the wood floor finish without cutting into the wood itself. Most commonly, a wood floor with a polyurethane finish coating is an excellent candidate for screening, because the polyurethane creates a non-penetrating plastic coating that actually sits on top of the wood flooring. We see better results when we screen a wood floor with a finish that is worn, scratched or dull but the wood beneath is not stained or damaged.

This photo is of the wood flooring in an area of the home before Screening.

Oak Wood Stair Refinishing in Atlantic Beach

Solid Oak wood stair treads refinished to match Maple wood flooring in Atlantic Beach, FloridaThe owners of a home in Atlantic Beach, Florida contracted Dan’s Floor Store to sand and refinish the solid Oak wood stair treads in their home to match the color of their beautiful solid Maple wood floors.

We have over 15 years of wood floor refinishing. Some refinishing projects are larger, with hundreds of square feet of flooring being sanded, stained, and finished for our clients. Some projects are smaller in area (such as this wood stair refinishing project), but require application of the same refinishing techniques. Read How Dan’s Floor Store Refinishes and Restores Wood Floors.

After sanding the Oak wood stair treads to prepare them for refinishing, part of the challenge of this particular project was matching different species Maple versus Oak. We needed to match the wood color of the solid Oak treads to the color of the existing solid Maple wood flooring.

It took some time and several tries to get the tone of the stair treads to match but we did it!  We used a little bit of dark Walnut ebony and white stain to create a continuous shade of wood in the flooring and stairs, throughout their home. Our clients were very happy with their refinished wood stairs!

Red Oak Flooring Refinish in Englewood

Grand old solid Red Oak floor after refinishingThe homeowners of an early 20th century home in the Englewood neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida called Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation about the old Red Oak flooring in their home.

  • They wanted to know if the flooring could be refinished, or needed to be replaced.

We found that the house had some very old solid Red Oak wood flooring, which had accumulated numerous water stains and pet urine stains, along with years of wear. (Some of the stains are visible in the before refinishing photos.) Most of this Red Oak flooring could be refinished, but some flooring was damaged so badly that it had to be replaced with solid wood flooring planks.

Next we sanded the whole floor, to prepare the wood for staining and finishing.

Discussing the project with our clients, we concluded that for this job we would need to use the technique of applying water to “pop” the grain of the wood, prior to applying the stain.

  • From our experience, this extra step allows the stain to penetrate deeper, creating a deeper, darker tone.

After “water pop”, staining, and finishing, these grand old solid Red Oak floors look good and are ready for years of service for our clients.
