Earlier this year, Dan’s Floor Store replaced approximately 1200 ft.² of Travetine tile with new European White Oak wood flooring in a home on the river in St. Johns county, Florida.
The flooring that was chosen for this project is Vintage Loft by Real Wood Floors, a wire brushed European White Oak wood flooring with a lot of texturing and some beautiful knots and grain for character.
First the existing Travertine tile flooring was removed.
In order for the new solid wood flooring to come flush to the existing Travertine in adjoining rooms, we installed “header boards”. Header boards run perpendicular to the direction of the wooden floor planks. We had to make perfect cuts for a good fit and pleasing appearance, using the old wisdom, “Measure twice and cut once”.
The mud bed for the old Travertine tile was not level enough to properly support the new wood flooring, so we had to taper and feather different thicknesses of plywood subfloor to graduate with the rolling mud bed and properly prepare and level the area for the new wood flooring.
We used flooring straps to get the floor super tight. Some of the planks/boards were very long boards up to 8 foot long to be exact.
The new European White Oak wood plank flooring has a 4 mm sawn face and is coated with UV cured oil. This wood flooring is 8 3/4 inches wide by 5/8 inch thick. The final European White Oak wood flooring looks beautiful!

Sand and Finish old solid Red Oak floors in Neptune Beach
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminDan’s Floor Store was contracted to sand and refinish the old solid Red Oak floors in a home in Neptune Beach, Florida.
On our first visit to the worksite to evaluate and estimate the project, we found existing wax on the wood flooring, with surface wear that looked like the floors had not been sanded and refinished since the 1950s.
First we sanded the old solid Red Oak floors. Next we applied a natural stain by DuraSeal. And then we added three coats of DuraSeal oil-modified polyurethane satin as finishing coats for durable protection for these old wooden floors.
As you can see in these photos, this old wood flooring was brought back to life by our excellent craftsmanship and superior machinery. And these old solid Red Oak floors will stay looking good for years ahead.

New Solid White Oak flooring in Atlantic Beach
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminThe client’s guest house has a great view of the Atlantic Ocean.
First we installed a plywood subfloor, to APA (APA – The Engineered Wood Association) and NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) standards.
Then we installed select grade, 5″ wide by 3/4″ thick solid White Oak flooring by Shamrock Plank Flooring. Wood flooring planks that are 5″ wide must be glued and nailed down, which is a bit more labor to install, but they look very elegant.
Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work complies with NWFA standards to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. For example, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.
Our crew will be coming back to sand and stain this new solid White Oak wood floor in a few months, after the wood has become fully acclimated.

New engineered White Oak wood floors in Jacksonville Beach
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminIt’s always nice when a client likes your work so much that they become a repeat client.
Dan’s Floor Store is very pleased that a lot of our wood floor and tile projects are either for repeat clients or are new clients referred to us by past clients who liked the wood floor or tile project we did for them and referred their family and friends to us.
Our client selected engineered White Oak flooring with white stain in the grain by Ark, called Brushed Linen from their Estate collection; a redefining beachy look. Very nice selection for this condo, near the beautiful beach.
There is a sound deadening requirement for flooring in Pier Point condos, because the building is comprised of 5 stories of stacked, concrete condo units. To achieve the sound deadening requirement for the condo flooring, we used Bostik’s Vapor Lock which is a sound deadening adhesive.
Our client prefers a shiny floor and the Ark engineered White Oak wood flooring she selected comes prefinished has a dull matte finish. No problem! We finished the floor in place with a semi gloss Bona Mega Clear HD.
We agree with our client, the results are beautiful! Another happy repeat client!

American Cherry Staircase for Westside Jacksonville Home
/in wood staircase installation /by adminRecently, Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to install a solid American Cherry staircase in a new green-friendly home on the Westside of Jacksonville, Florida. Solar panels were among a number of ecologically conscious design features in the home.
In addition to serving the function of allowing people to move from one floor of their home or business to another, a staircase can be customized like this one was, with a favorite wood and finish, to be more attractive and to reflect the personal taste of the owners.
Following installation, the stairs of this solid American Cherry staircase were sanded and given a natural finish with two coats of an eco-friendly finish that was provided by the homeowner.

Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation
/in vinyl plank flooring /by adminVinyl plank flooring provides impressive wood and stone looks that stand up to high traffic and high moisture, and this flooring has become very popular in commercial settings and is also becoming more popular in residences as well.
The clients chose a color named “Primitive Forest – Falcon” for the yoga studio area of their store.
There was an immense amount of floor leveling prior to installation of the vinyl tile flooring, as seen in the before photos.
We also installed baseboards and shoe molding. This Armstrong Luxe Vinyl Plank flooring installation resulted in a really cool looking floor!

New European White Oak wood floor and Stair Tread Refinishing in South Jax Beach
/1 Comment/in New Wood Flooring Installation, Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminNew wood flooring installation follows a thorough and often extensive subfloor leveling process which Dan’s Floor Store must perform to prevent variations in the surface of the subfloor causing dips and humps in the wood flooring installation. These photos show the subfloor.
These photos show wood floor planks being strapped together with special flooring straps during installation, due to the width of the planks. Included in one of the photos is a bucket of the Bostick GreenForce combined high performance adhesive and moisture control membrane that we used.
This elegant solid European White Oak wood floor is redefining the “Beachy” look without being super light; it has a fumed-type of look and as you can see, there is a lot of variation in the darkness of the finish from plank to plank.
The second part of the project was to sand and stain the wooden stair treads to blend with the new European White Oak wood floor.
Here’s a quick video we took of the finished project.
Our clients were very pleased with the finished look of their new wood floors and refinished stairs.

Refinishing Old Wood Floors in St. Nicholas area of Jacksonville
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminDan’s Floor Store refinished some old solid Red Oak plank wood floors as part of a home renovation in the Saint Nicholas neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, just off of Atlantic Boulevard.
The home had been built in the 1950s and was being updated by Howard Construction of Orange Park.
Every old wood floor refinishing project starts with a free consultation and evaluation of the condition of the existing wood floors.
These “before” photos of the old Red Oak wood floors in the home show how worn and damaged the floors were; they were in terrible condition, but we could refinish them to look like new. Some of the old flooring even appeared to have the original wax still on it.
First we thoroughly sanded the solid Red Oak wood floors to remove the old finish and wear damage.
After sanding these old wood floors, we applied a Minwax Red Oak stain. Then we applied three coats of Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish.
We also refinished an area of old pine wood flooring in the lower level of the home, using the same Minwax Red Oak stain, followed by Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish to give a continuous appearance to the wood flooring in the home.

New Red Oak Wood Flooring in Ponte Vedra Beach
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminBeing near the beach, the old wood floors had gotten a lot of wear damage from sand tracked into the home and brought in with beach gear.
Following removal of the old wood floors, Dan’s Floor Store installed unfinished 2 1/4′ wide solid plank Red Oak wood flooring by Howell flooring.
To level and prepare the new wood floor planks, they need to be sanded after they are installed. So we sanded the new Red Oak wood flooring and then applied DuraSeal Golden Brown stain. We followed the stain with three topcoats of Bona Mega HD clear, satin for plenty of durability in the sandy, abrasive beach environment.
