Wood Floor Refinishing near San Marco

Refinished solid wood flooring near San MarcoA couple who had been a client of our Dan’s Floor Store previously called us to their home, off old San Jose boulevard, near historic San Marco neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, to talk about refinishing more of their wood flooring.

We have been refinishing wood floors in homes and businesses on the First Coast area for over 15 years. Wood floor refinishing restores older floors with a durable finish that will last for years, and the clients can have their floors stained to achieve a different look during the process. Read more about How Dan’s Floor Store refinishes wood floors.

In our previous work, we had sanded and finished half of the wood flooring in their house and stained it a medium brown color.

Since the couple were taking a vacation, they asked if we could refinish the other thousand square feet of their residence while they were away. And so we did. First we prepared the rest of the worn wood flooring by sanding it, and then we stained it in the same exact color as the previous work, so there was the look of smooth continuity throughout their house.

Now the wood floors throughout the home have been restored to look like new again!

Screening and Re-coating Wood Flooring in Sawgrass Country Club

Screening and Re-coating is a wood floor maintenance procedure that helps wood flooring last even longer.

Screening and Re-coating a Wood Floor in Sawgrass Country ClubFor most wood floors, after 3 to 5 years, the finish has been scuffed by normal use, and our Screening and Re-coating process will restore the finish to like new, to last another 3 to 5 years.

“Screening” (sanding with clog-resistant sanding disks) removes the wood floor finish without cutting into the wood itself. Most commonly, a wood floor with a polyurethane finish coating is an excellent candidate for screening. Polyurethane finish creates a non-penetrating plastic coating that sits on top of the wood flooring. We see better results when we screen a wood floor with a finish that is worn, scratched or dull but the wood beneath is not stained or damaged.

About 5 years ago, Dan’s Floor Store installed wood flooring in this home in the Sawgrass Country Club neighborhood. The client consulted Dan, asking what to do because the finish on their floors had become worn and scratched. They were thinking the wood flooring would need to be replaced. After we inspected their wood flooring, the client was very happy to learn that the floors could be screened and re-coated for a fraction of the cost (and time) of replacing their wood floors.

The client’s wood floors of both plank and parquet Red Oak flooring, with Early American stain by Minwax, turned out great. The client was very happy to see how nice their finished floors looked. Nice to be able to save the client some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Home Improvements in Stages – New Engineered Wood Flooring in Mandarin

About two years ago, we installed some new wood flooring in a home in Mandarin. Our clients enjoyed their wood floors, and this year invited us back to install engineered wood flooring in two more rooms.

New Engineered Wood Floor in kitchen, in home in Mandarin. We enjoy helping our clients achieve their home improvement goals.

Sometimes making home improvements such as adding wood flooring, or tile projects, or even refinishing an existing wood floor, in stages, over time, makes more sense for clients.

Many of our clients have been able to enjoy completing more upgrades to their homes by accomplishing them in stages, which allows them to stay within their household budgets.

This time the new engineered wood flooring installation project presented more opportunities for use of our flooring skills and experience:

  • The two rooms having new engineered wood flooring installed were not connected. There is a bathroom with a tiled floor between the two rooms getting new wood flooring.
  • The hallway between the project rooms was already finished in wood flooring.  To create a seamless look in the wood floors, we did what we refer to as a weave-in repair with the wood planks at each of the doorways.
  • Getting a level surface for installing the new wood flooring on this project was also interesting, because there were transitions from concrete subfloors to plywood subfloors in this part of the home.

The new wood flooring is Forest Accents‘ Timeless Textures line, in Maple Tawny, and it looks great in our clients’ home, and we are happy to help them reach their home improvement goals.

Had to replace tile on the face of the riser of this step, to match the adjacent wood flooring.

Flood Water Flooring Replacement in south Jacksonville Beach

New Wide Plank, Hand Rubbed, Distressed, Engineered Wood FlooringThis flood water flooring replacement project began with a call from a repeat client, whose home in south Jacksonville Beach had been flooded; both wood flooring and tile flooring in the home had been damaged by the accidental flooding and had to be replaced.

Dan’s Floor Store is experienced working flooring restoration projects like this, with home owners and their insurance companies.

We began this project by removing the damaged tile and wood flooring.

Once all the tile and wood flooring were removed floor leveling was done and we could begin installing! The client chose LM Flooring – St Laurent European Oak 7 1/4″ wide by 1/2″ thick for this project. New baseboards and shoe molding were provided and also installed.

The client was thankful to get the damaged flooring and tile in their home replaced. They were very pleased with their new floors, and are able to enjoy living in their home again.

New Engineered Wood Flooring with Stairs

New Santos Mahogany Engineered Wood Flooring, installed in a home in Jacksonville BeachA client in Jacksonville Beach contracted Dan’s Floor Store to replace the old, contractor grade carpeting in several rooms of their home with beautiful Santos Mahogany engineered wood flooring by Armstrong.

  • Please Note: As of 2023, hardwood flooring is no longer provided by Armstrong.

Most standard, contractor grade carpeting installed in new construction homes is only designed to last for 3 or 4 years before it begins to deteriorate and becomes harder to clean.

Also, carpeting tends to trap pollen and other allergens, and if anyone living in the home or working in the business office has allergies, this can cause problems year around.

These are reasons why Dan’s Floor Store recommends installing hard surface flooring, such as wood flooring, tile, or stone in homes and offices.

As you can see in these photos, this flooring project was a little different than most because it included installing the new wood flooring on the stair well landing and refinishing treads on the stairs to match, in this two story home.

Cupped Wood Floor Refinishing Project in Mandarin

Severely cupped wood floor, before refinishingWe were asked to look at a wood floor in the Beauclerc community, in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville, Florida, that exhibited severe cupping. We took this photo of the client’s severly cupped floor, prior to refinishing.

A cupped wood floor occurs when flooring absorbs excessive moisture on the underside of the flooring planks, causing expansion and cupping, with the edges of the planks raised. Moisture can also cause wood flooring to exhibit a condition called crowning, in which the outer edges of the wood planks shrink and become lower than the middle of each plank. Dan’s Floor Store can refinish wood floors with either condition. A worn wood floor may be able to be refinished, and damaged wood floors can be repaired for beautiful results.

This was a prefinished aluminum oxide finished floor that was severely cupped. The repair areas (new wood) were filled in upon our arrival. Since the floor had a severe cup to it, we had to cross sand the floor a total of five times on alternating 45 degree angles to the grain of the wood, in order to achieve a flat floor surface.

We continued our refinishing process with rough and fine sanding (with the grain of the wood), then scraped corners and buffed, in preparation for a MinWax Golden Oak stain.

After the stain had dried, we applied 3 coats of polyurethane finish. Our client was very happy to see the results of our refinishing procedure.

Wood Floor Refinishing project in San Marco

Solid Red Oak Wood Floor - San Marco - afterRecently Dan’s Floor Store was asked to refinish some old wood floors in the beautiful, historic San Marco neighborhood, here in Jacksonville, Florida.

These solid Red Oak wood floors had been exposed to decades of wear and abuse. You can see the indentation, scratches, and worn finish in these pre-refinishing photos.

Dan did a thorough inspection of the client’s wood flooring. Then he told the client that we could refinish these floors so they could enjoy them for years and years ahead.

Their solid wood flooring had not been damaged to the degree that we recommended replacement.

Dan and the client looked through our samples of recommended quality wood stains and finishes. We agreed which ones would fit the decor of their home and hold up for the foot traffic planned for these rooms. A Minwax Honey stain was selected, with a polyurethane finish.

We followed our Dan’s Floor Store Quality Wood Floor Refinishing process. Our wood floor refinishing project made these rooms unavailable to the client for a total of 7 days, during which we were actually in their home 4 work days. (The additional project time was required to allow the stain and the finish to completely dry.)

We appreciate being able to restore floors like this to better-than-new appearance, giving our clients beautiful flooring for their homes and businesses.

Wood Flooring Project in Sawgrass Country Club

After new hard surface wood flooring was installedDan’s Floor Store recently completed a multi-room engineered wood flooring installation project in a home at the Sawgrass Country Club, in Ponte Vedra, Florida.

This was one of our larger scale projects, covering approximately 1,500 ft.² in various rooms.

The project began with removal of the old, worn, contractor grade carpeting, and existing tile flooring, including removal of the baseboards in each room to receive new flooring. We often remove baseboards when replacing flooring, because it saves time for our crew, getting us out of the client’s home or office faster (and giving the client the privacy of their property, once more).

The next phase of the project was floor leveling, and this home required quite a bit. Floor leveling is very important in preparation for installation of new flooring. Unlevel floors can cause hard surface flooring to crack, reducing the life of the new flooring and requiring replacement of sections of your new flooring.

Then we installed a new engineered birch wood flooring made by Urban Floor. The client selected a pattern that is 5″ wide by 1/2″ thick, dark in color, with the descriptive name, “Birch Black Tea“, from their Welcome Home series.

The whole project took about a week, mostly because of the amount of leveling that was required.

Following the installation of the new flooring, we upgraded these rooms of the client’s home with an impressive 5 1/4″ tall baseboard, and shoe molding for a nice finishing touch in trim work.
