Walnut-Pegged Red Oak Plank Flooring Install – Finish – St. Augustine

This article is about the completion of a wood floor project in a home located in the Davis Shores community in St. Augustine, Florida. The project was a result of the damaged caused by flooding during hurricane Matthew, in the fall of 2016.

Behind the home is the waterfront of Mantanzas Bay. The home sits just across the Bay from Castillo de San Marco..

These homeowners had called Dan’s Floor Store because they wanted to have the wood floors in their home restored to look like the Walnut-pegged Red Oak plank flooring that they enjoyed having before the storm. The old wood floors had been water damaged by the hurricane and had to be removed.

In the previous Dan’s Floor Store article on this project, we had drilled the red oak planks for the walnut pegs, and installed the red oak plank flooring. After the flooring was installed, we waited over a month to allow the solid wood flooring to acclimate.

Then we inserted all the 3/4″ Walnut pegs, gluing them into their previously drilled holes in the Red Oak plank flooring.

The next step in this installation was sanding the new Walnut-pegged Red Oak plank flooring.

Then we stained the new Red Oak plank flooring with DuraSeal Golden Brown

To protect the Walnut-pegged Red Oak plank flooring, we finished it with Bona oil-modified Woodline satin polyurethane.

Our clients were very happy with their new Red Oak plank floors with Walnut pegs. And Dan’s Floor Store like to have happy clients.

Red Oak Plank Flooring with Walnut Pegs – St. Augustine Install

This wood floor project was another one that resulted from flooding during hurricane Matthew, in the fall of 2016.

The project home is located in the Davis Shores community in St. Augustine, Florida. Behind the home is the waterfront of Mantanzas Bay. The home is sitting just across the water from Castillo de San Marco.

The homeowners called Dan’s Floor Store because they wanted to have the wood floors in their home restored to look like the Red Oak plank floors with Walnut pegs that they enjoyed having before the storm. The old wood floors had been water damaged by the hurricane and had to be removed.

We ordered solid, unfinished select Red Oak plank flooring in random widths from one of our sources. The 4″, 6″, and 8″ wide planks are 3/4″ thick.

The peg pattern in the old wooden floor was unique. We took measurements and made some drilling jigs to help us mimic the drill pattern for the 3/4″ holes we needed for installing the Walnut pegs in the new Red Oak flooring.

Our Dan’s Floor Store crew drilled all the peg holes in the Red Oak plank flooring.

Here are some photos taken as we installed the new solid Red Oak wood flooring.

Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work complies with NWFA standards to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our clients. As an example, when installing solid wood flooring like we did in this project, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet to achieve adequate spacing.

After the flooring was installed, we waited over a month to allow the solid wood flooring to acclimate.

Whitewashed Refinished Red Oak Flooring – Sawgrass TPC

Homeowners in Sawgrass, on TPC side Contacted Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation and estimate.

The homeowners wanted to change the look of the red oak wood flooring in their home.

It had become very yellowed due to aging and use of an oil based polyurethane finish.

Whitewashed refinished red oak wood flooring.Following some conversation with the homeowners to find out their preferences, Dan suggested using a brand new sealer called Bona NordicSeal.

Bona NordicSeal creates a whitewashed look for wood floors without the use of caustic materials like bleach. NordicSeal creates the look of staining a wood floor white after 3 coats of it have been applied applied. Whitewashed wood floors are coming back en vogue. We believe NordicSeal is something special; it creates a look that is very cool!

First we sanded and hand scraped the old red oak flooring and stair treads, rails, and newel posts to remove the old, yellowed finish.

After applying 3 coats of the Bona NordicSeal we achieved a wood flooring color that looks so white. It helps subdue all the pinks and yellows you would usually see in red oak wood flooring with a natural finish.

We appreciate the confidence shown in Dan’s Floor Store by our clients – jumping on the opportunity to use this new product. Not only were our clients blown away with the whitewashed look of their red oak flooring, so was Dan.

After the three coats of NordicSeal were applied, we buffed down the sealer and then top coated the wood flooring with Bona Traffic HD satin.

The stairs, rails and newel posts were coated the same to blend with the floor.

Replacing Water Damaged Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine

Sanded, stained, and refinished red oak plank flooringHomeowners contracted Dan’s Floor Store to replace water damaged red oak flooring after the lower floor of their home took on and was damaged by water during Hurricane Matthew last fall.

The water damaged the subflooring in some areas, as well as the wood flooring. Before we could install the new wood flooring, we tore out 650 square feet of plywood subfloor and water damaged Red Oak (solid) wood flooring. Then our Dan’s Floor Store crew installed new plywood subfloor, with moisture barrier to protect the Red Oak new wood flooring.

For this project, we replaced the water damaged red oak flooring with 2 1/4″ strip unfinished Red Oak number 1 Common by Shamrock Plank Flooring and weaved the new red oak planks into existing, undamaged flooring.

After allowing a few weeks for the new wood flooring to acclimate, we came back to sand and finish the floor.

Our clients took this as an opportunity to give the wood floors and stair treads of their home a new look. They wanted a dark brown color for their floors and stair treads.

First our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded the wood flooring and stair treads in the home.

To achieve the look they wanted, we next popped the grain of the sanded wood. Our crew conditioned floor with wet rags prior to staining. Popping raises the grain of the wood to allow the stain to penetrate deeper in the wood thus making the color ten times darker than stain could be straight out of the can.

To achieve the dark brown wood color for our clients, we used DuraSeal Espresso stain, and it turned out fabulous.

Then, for a durable, long lasting finish, we applied Bona waterborne finishes (Bona Mega Clear HD Satin for first two coats, followed by Bona Traffic Satin for the final coat).

And then we trimmed out the job with new shoe molding and new stain matched thresholds at all exiting doorways.

Our clients were thrilled with the new look of their Red Oak wood floors and stair treads, and Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Old Red Oak Wood Floor Repair and Refinishing in Jacksonville Beach

Old solid Red Oak wood floor after repair & refinishingFollowing one of our free Dan’s Floor Store on-site consultations, we recommended a section of the old Red Oak wood flooring in our client’s older cinder block house from the 50s that had been water damaged be replaced, and the rest of their solid Red Oak wood floor be refinished.

We recommended refinishing these old Red Oak wood floors because, except for the area that was water damaged, they were in extremely good condition for their age.

First, we removed the old, water damaged boards and wove in the replacement solid Red Oak boards.

Our customer chose a natural finish for their clear grade Red Oak wood floor.

After sanding, we applied one coat of Bona IntenseSeal, followed by 3 coats of durable Bona Traffic Satin finish.

Sand and Finish old solid Red Oak floors in Neptune Beach

Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to sand and refinish the old solid Red Oak floors in a home in Neptune Beach, Florida.

On our first visit to the worksite to evaluate and estimate the project, we found existing wax on the wood flooring, with surface wear that looked like the floors had not been sanded and refinished since the 1950s.

First we sanded the old solid Red Oak floors. Next we applied a natural stain by DuraSeal. And then we added three coats of DuraSeal oil-modified polyurethane satin as finishing coats for durable protection for these old wooden floors.

As you can see in these photos, this old wood flooring was brought back to life by our excellent craftsmanship and superior machinery. And these old solid Red Oak floors will stay looking good for years ahead.

Refinishing Old Wood Floors in St. Nicholas area of Jacksonville

Dan’s Floor Store refinished some old solid Red Oak plank wood floors as part of a home renovation in the Saint Nicholas neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, just off of Atlantic Boulevard.

The home had been built in the 1950s and was being updated by Howard Construction of Orange Park.

Every old wood floor refinishing project starts with a free consultation and evaluation of the condition of the existing wood floors.

These “before” photos of the old Red Oak wood floors in the home show how worn and damaged the floors were; they were in terrible condition, but we could refinish them to look like new. Some of the old flooring even appeared to have the original wax still on it.

First we thoroughly sanded the solid Red Oak wood floors to remove the old finish and wear damage.

After sanding these old wood floors, we applied a Minwax Red Oak stain. Then we applied three coats of Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish.

We also refinished an area of old pine wood flooring in the lower level of the home, using the same Minwax Red Oak stain, followed by Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish to give a continuous appearance to the wood flooring in the home.

New Red Oak Wood Flooring in Ponte Vedra Beach

View of the Guana Reserve from the client's Ponte Vedra Beach home.Homeowners of an appealing home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida that overlooks the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve needed the old wood flooring in their home replaced.

Being near the beach, the old wood floors had gotten a lot of wear damage from sand tracked into the home and brought in with beach gear.

Following removal of the old wood floors, Dan’s Floor Store installed unfinished 2 1/4′ wide solid plank Red Oak wood flooring by Howell flooring.

To level and prepare the new wood floor planks, they need to be sanded after they are installed. So we sanded the new Red Oak wood flooring and then applied DuraSeal Golden Brown stain. We followed the stain with three topcoats of Bona Mega HD clear, satin for plenty of durability in the sandy, abrasive beach environment.

Refinishing Wood Floors for a Beach House Look

Stained and refinished Red Oak floor for the beach house lookFollowing one of our Free consultations about the condition of their floors and what the homeowners wanted to accomplish, Dan’s Floor Store was given the job of refinishing two wood floors in a home in Atlantic Beach, Florida.

The clients wanted to achieve more of a “beach house look” in their home. We could refinish their existing wood flooring as part of renovations to achieve this look.

They had some nice Red Oak flooring installed in one area of their home.

This is how the Red Oak floor looked, prior to staining and refinishing.

And this is how the Yellow Pine Kitchen floor looked, prior to staining and refinishing.

To get the “beach house look” that the clients’ wanted, we sanded the floors and then applied water to “pop” the grain of the wood (to allow the stain to penetrate deeper into the wood grain).

We stained the floors with a mixture of two parts white to one part classic gray. Then we applied the finishing coating of polyurethane to protect the wood floors so they will continue to look good for years.

Wood Floor Repair and Refinishing in Jacksonville

exposed sub-floor prior to weave-in wood floor repairFollowing one of our free consultations, Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to repair the Red Oak wood flooring in a Jacksonville home as part of a renovation project.

This home has a beautiful view of the St. Johns river, and is located near University Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard.

As part of the renovation work, the existing kitchen and a wall were removed, leaving a large hole in the existing wood flooring. Dan’s Floor Store skills in wood floor repair can help make this wood floor look beautiful again.

To fill this exposed area of subfloor, we installed new 1 1/2″ solid Red Oak plank flooring, weaving each piece into existing planks of the old wood floors. Slightly over 100 of the new planks were woven-in to repair the floors in this home. A weave-in wood floor repair is a little more difficult than installing new wood plank flooring, and more routine weave-in repairs usually involve fewer planks to added.

It’s good practice to allow the wood flooring to sit and acclimate for two weeks prior to starting the refinishing phase of the project – sanding and finishing these floors.

Several weeks later we began the next phase of this project.

This solid inch and a half strip Red Oak flooring had some cupping to it so we had to sand it at a 45 degree angle, just like we do with all new solid wood flooring. Sanding wood flooring at a 45 degree angle helps to flatten the floor surface, so that we can “cut” (sand) the floor straight with rough grit paper.

A neutral DuraSeal stain was chosen for this floor to compliment the dark cherry color cabinets to be installed. Two coats of water based polyurethane were applied, followed by a final coat of Bona Traffic satin when the remainder of the renovation work in the home was completed.

Here are some photos of the final kitchen, with new Kitchen Cabinets and Island installed by Horn Builders. Everyone likes how the new darker finished cabinets and island are set off by the lighter wood flooring.

Removing the kitchen wall resulted in a much roomier kitchen, and gave the clients the open floor plan appearance that they wanted.
