Refinishing Old Wood Floors in St. Nicholas area of Jacksonville

Dan’s Floor Store refinished some old solid Red Oak plank wood floors as part of a home renovation in the Saint Nicholas neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, just off of Atlantic Boulevard.

The home had been built in the 1950s and was being updated by Howard Construction of Orange Park.

Every old wood floor refinishing project starts with a free consultation and evaluation of the condition of the existing wood floors.

These “before” photos of the old Red Oak wood floors in the home show how worn and damaged the floors were; they were in terrible condition, but we could refinish them to look like new. Some of the old flooring even appeared to have the original wax still on it.

First we thoroughly sanded the solid Red Oak wood floors to remove the old finish and wear damage.

After sanding these old wood floors, we applied a Minwax Red Oak stain. Then we applied three coats of Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish.

We also refinished an area of old pine wood flooring in the lower level of the home, using the same Minwax Red Oak stain, followed by Bona Oil-Modified Satin polyurethane finish to give a continuous appearance to the wood flooring in the home.

New Red Oak Wood Flooring in Ponte Vedra Beach

View of the Guana Reserve from the client's Ponte Vedra Beach home.Homeowners of an appealing home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida that overlooks the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve needed the old wood flooring in their home replaced.

Being near the beach, the old wood floors had gotten a lot of wear damage from sand tracked into the home and brought in with beach gear.

Following removal of the old wood floors, Dan’s Floor Store installed unfinished 2 1/4′ wide solid plank Red Oak wood flooring by Howell flooring.

To level and prepare the new wood floor planks, they need to be sanded after they are installed. So we sanded the new Red Oak wood flooring and then applied DuraSeal Golden Brown stain. We followed the stain with three topcoats of Bona Mega HD clear, satin for plenty of durability in the sandy, abrasive beach environment.

Refinishing Old Heart Pine Floors in St. Augustine

Elegant antique solid Heart Pine wood floor after restorationAmong the many historic attractions in St. Augustine, Florida, there are some elegant old homes which reflect their own special charm. Some are public venues while others remain private residences.

We have been part of restoring several of these fine old St. Augustine private homes by refinishing their stately wood flooring to their earlier appearance.

Every project is unique; some wood floors just need to be sanded and refinished, while other wood floors have been damaged to such extent that a portion must be replaced. And then some clients want their old wood flooring replaced with something different.

Following our free consultation and estimate, Dan’s Floor Store was recently contracted to sand and refinish the 70 plus year old solid Heart Pine wood floors in one of these elegant old homes.

These photos show the old Heart Pine flooring prior to refinishing. In one photo, you can see the attractive Heart Pine wood revealed again as we are sanding the floors in one room of the home.

These photos show how remarkable these antique Heart Pine floors look after we carefully sanded and refinished them with Bona Traffic Natural satin. These refinished floors look good again and are ready for more years of service.

Wood Flooring Refinish and Repair in Jacksonville Beach

Dan’s Floor Store was selected to refinish the wood floors in this home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

In addition to refinishing the wood floors, there was a section of flooring that had to be replaced; a 50 board, weave-in repair. We also installed some nice vinyl plank flooring in the upstairs master bedroom suite.

These photos show us preparing for and during the refinishing phase of this project.

The client chose the Classic Gray stain by DuraSeal for the 2 1/4″ solid Red Oak flooring downstairs. We applied Bona Traffic polyurethane (a commercial-rated, waterborne finish) coating to protect the wood floor, in a satin sheen.

We agree that our client’s selection, the Classic Gray stain by DuraSeal, conveys a very beachy look; very fitting for the location of the home, just steps away from the Beach.

At Dan’s Floor Store, we enjoy helping clients save some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Wood Floor Repair, Sand, and Stain in Ponte Vedra Florida

Refinished (sanded and stained) solid Red Oak wood floorWe were invited out to a home in TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida to provide one of our free professional consultations concerning their wood floors.

The clients wanted to renovate their home with darker wood floors and stairway, and wanted our insight on a water damaged area of wood flooring in their home.

  • Rather than replacing their wood floors, we recommended sanding and staining them, and repairing the damaged area of wood flooring.

This project presented a large area of wood flooring to be sanded and stained, in addition to the area of wood flooring to be repaired.

In the damaged flooring area, the plywood sub-floor and the solid wood flooring had to be removed and the concrete dried out before the new plywood could be installed followed by new 3 1/4 inch solid Red Oak wood flooring.

The staircase treads had been the natural color of the wood floor, with white risers to the treads. The stair treads and risers would need to be sanded and stained as part of this project.

The customers selected a DuraSeal in Antique Brown for their floors and staircase.

A satin waterborne Bona Traffic polyurethane was used for coating.

This was a large scale flooring project, and after it was finished, it looked great and it was a fun one to work on! We enjoy helping clients save some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Screening and Recoating Wood Floors and Stairs in Epping Forest

Beautiful Wood Floor after screening and re-coatingDan’s Floor Store was called to an elegant two story home in Epping Forest, for one of our Free consultations. We were asked if their 2,300 square feet of wood flooring should be refinished or replaced.

After inspecting the floors with the clients, we recommended a process called Screening and Recoating, a refinishing procedure for wood flooring that helps it last even longer. Based on our recommendation, the client asked us to also refinish the stair treads, for a refreshed look through their home.

From our experience, the finish on most wood floors has been scuffed by normal use after 3 to 5 years. Our Screening and Re-coating process restores the finish to like new, to last another 3 to 5 years.

The “Screening” process sands the wood flooring with clog-resistant sanding disks, removing the wood floor finish without cutting into the wood itself. Most commonly, a wood floor with a polyurethane finish coating is an excellent candidate for screening, because the polyurethane creates a non-penetrating plastic coating that actually sits on top of the wood flooring. We see better results when we screen a wood floor with a finish that is worn, scratched or dull but the wood beneath is not stained or damaged.

This photo is of the wood flooring in an area of the home before Screening.

Wood Floor Refinishing near San Marco

Refinished solid wood flooring near San MarcoA couple who had been a client of our Dan’s Floor Store previously called us to their home, off old San Jose boulevard, near historic San Marco neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, to talk about refinishing more of their wood flooring.

We have been refinishing wood floors in homes and businesses on the First Coast area for over 15 years. Wood floor refinishing restores older floors with a durable finish that will last for years, and the clients can have their floors stained to achieve a different look during the process. Read more about How Dan’s Floor Store refinishes wood floors.

In our previous work, we had sanded and finished half of the wood flooring in their house and stained it a medium brown color.

Since the couple were taking a vacation, they asked if we could refinish the other thousand square feet of their residence while they were away. And so we did. First we prepared the rest of the worn wood flooring by sanding it, and then we stained it in the same exact color as the previous work, so there was the look of smooth continuity throughout their house.

Now the wood floors throughout the home have been restored to look like new again!

Screening and Re-coating Wood Flooring in Sawgrass Country Club

Screening and Re-coating is a wood floor maintenance procedure that helps wood flooring last even longer.

About 5 years ago, Dan’s Floor Store installed wood flooring in this home in the Sawgrass Country Club neighborhood. The client consulted Dan, asking what to do because the finish on their floors had become worn and scratched. They were thinking the wood flooring would need to be replaced. After we inspected their wood flooring, the client was very happy to learn that the floors could be screened and re-coated for a fraction of the cost (and time) of replacing their wood floors.

The client’s wood floors of both plank and parquet Red Oak flooring, with Early American stain by Minwax, turned out great. The client was very happy to see how nice their finished floors looked. Nice to be able to save the client some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Cupped Wood Floor Refinishing Project in Mandarin

Severely cupped wood floor, before refinishingWe were asked to look at a wood floor in the Beauclerc community, in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville, Florida, that exhibited severe cupping. We took this photo of the client’s severly cupped floor, prior to refinishing.

A cupped wood floor occurs when flooring absorbs excessive moisture on the underside of the flooring planks, causing expansion and cupping, with the edges of the planks raised. Moisture can also cause wood flooring to exhibit a condition called crowning, in which the outer edges of the wood planks shrink and become lower than the middle of each plank. Dan’s Floor Store can refinish wood floors with either condition. A worn wood floor may be able to be refinished, and damaged wood floors can be repaired for beautiful results.

This was a prefinished aluminum oxide finished floor that was severely cupped. The repair areas (new wood) were filled in upon our arrival. Since the floor had a severe cup to it, we had to cross sand the floor a total of five times on alternating 45 degree angles to the grain of the wood, in order to achieve a flat floor surface.

We continued our refinishing process with rough and fine sanding (with the grain of the wood), then scraped corners and buffed, in preparation for a MinWax Golden Oak stain.

After the stain had dried, we applied 3 coats of polyurethane finish. Our client was very happy to see the results of our refinishing procedure.
