Screening and Recoating Wood Floors and Stairs in Epping Forest

Beautiful Wood Floor after screening and re-coatingDan’s Floor Store was called to an elegant two story home in Epping Forest, for one of our Free consultations. We were asked if their 2,300 square feet of wood flooring should be refinished or replaced.

After inspecting the floors with the clients, we recommended a process called Screening and Recoating, a refinishing procedure for wood flooring that helps it last even longer. Based on our recommendation, the client asked us to also refinish the stair treads, for a refreshed look through their home.

From our experience, the finish on most wood floors has been scuffed by normal use after 3 to 5 years. Our Screening and Re-coating process restores the finish to like new, to last another 3 to 5 years.

The “Screening” process sands the wood flooring with clog-resistant sanding disks, removing the wood floor finish without cutting into the wood itself. Most commonly, a wood floor with a polyurethane finish coating is an excellent candidate for screening, because the polyurethane creates a non-penetrating plastic coating that actually sits on top of the wood flooring. We see better results when we screen a wood floor with a finish that is worn, scratched or dull but the wood beneath is not stained or damaged.

This photo is of the wood flooring in an area of the home before Screening.

The Screened and Recoated wood floors looked great and our clients were very pleased to see the results. We enjoy helping clients save some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Oak Wood Stair Refinishing in Atlantic Beach

Solid Oak wood stair treads refinished to match Maple wood flooring in Atlantic Beach, FloridaThe owners of a home in Atlantic Beach, Florida contracted Dan’s Floor Store to sand and refinish the solid Oak wood stair treads in their home to match the color of their beautiful solid Maple wood floors.

We have over 15 years of wood floor refinishing. Some refinishing projects are larger, with hundreds of square feet of flooring being sanded, stained, and finished for our clients. Some projects are smaller in area (such as this wood stair refinishing project), but require application of the same refinishing techniques. Read How Dan’s Floor Store Refinishes and Restores Wood Floors.

After sanding the Oak wood stair treads to prepare them for refinishing, part of the challenge of this particular project was matching different species Maple versus Oak. We needed to match the wood color of the solid Oak treads to the color of the existing solid Maple wood flooring.

It took some time and several tries to get the tone of the stair treads to match but we did it!  We used a little bit of dark Walnut ebony and white stain to create a continuous shade of wood in the flooring and stairs, throughout their home. Our clients were very happy with their refinished wood stairs!

Red Oak Flooring Refinish in Englewood

Grand old solid Red Oak floor after refinishingThe homeowners of an early 20th century home in the Englewood neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida called Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation about the old Red Oak flooring in their home.

  • They wanted to know if the flooring could be refinished, or needed to be replaced.

We found that the house had some very old solid Red Oak wood flooring, which had accumulated numerous water stains and pet urine stains, along with years of wear. (Some of the stains are visible in the before refinishing photos.) Most of this Red Oak flooring could be refinished, but some flooring was damaged so badly that it had to be replaced with solid wood flooring planks.

Next we sanded the whole floor, to prepare the wood for staining and finishing.

Discussing the project with our clients, we concluded that for this job we would need to use the technique of applying water to “pop” the grain of the wood, prior to applying the stain.

  • From our experience, this extra step allows the stain to penetrate deeper, creating a deeper, darker tone.

After “water pop”, staining, and finishing, these grand old solid Red Oak floors look good and are ready for years of service for our clients.

Refinishing Fine Old Wood Floors in Historic Riverside

Refinished, beautiful solid hardwood floors in RiversideDan’s Floor Store was called to refinish the impressive old wood floors in one of the beautiful historic homes in the Riverside neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida.

This grand old house had some beautiful wood floors that just needed to be refinished to be enjoyed.

  • There are rift and quarter sawn solid White Oak flooring with Walnut feature strips in the common areas of the home.

  • The flooring to be refinished in the two bedrooms are of solid antique Heart Pine.

Showing how "Water Pop" darkens the effect of stain on the hardwood flooringAfter discussing the project with our clients, from our experience we concluded that for this job we would need to “pop” the grain of the wood with water prior to applying the stain.

This extra step allowed the stain to penetrate deeper, creating a deeper, darker tone.

This photo shows the same stain (dark walnut) on both samples, the darker one has been water popped which can definitely produce a deeper, darker color.

After sanding, these elegant solid hardwood floors were ready for staining and finishing. You can see the designs in the quartersawn solid White Oak hardwood flooring with rift-in Walnut feature strips better after sanding the floor, to prepare for refinishing.

During the coating and finishing part of the project, these elegant floors seem to shimmer.

The following photos show the beautiful results of professional refinishing on the old wood floors in this historic Riverside home. Durable, solid hardwood flooring that will last for years.

New Hardwood Floors and Refinishing in Epping Forest

Dan’s Floor Store was invited to help a couple improve the hardwood floors of their home in the Epping Forest neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida.

Part of the project was to install 900 square feet of new, unfinished solid Red Oak select hardwood flooring from Shamrock Plank Flooring (2 1/4″ x 3/4″), which then had to be sanded, stained, and finished (with three coats of polyurethane for a beautiful, durable protective finish). For best results, we allowed the newly installed wood flooring to acclimate for about a month and a half before sanding, staining, and finishing it.

There was also also a set of stairs and 2300 square feet of existing hardwood floors downstairs that needed to be refinished – sanded (“screened”) and then coated with one coat of Bona Traffic Satin polyurethane finish.

As part of this project, to get the effect the clients wanted, we needed to use the refinishing technique of “popping” the grain of the wood with water prior to applying the stain. Then we applied a stain color of antique brown, which resulted in a perfect color match to downstairs wood!

Here are some close up of the edge work on these elegant, solid Red Oak hardwood floors.

Wood Floor Refinishing near San Marco

Refinished solid wood flooring near San MarcoA couple who had been a client of our Dan’s Floor Store previously called us to their home, off old San Jose boulevard, near historic San Marco neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, to talk about refinishing more of their wood flooring.

We have been refinishing wood floors in homes and businesses on the First Coast area for over 15 years. Wood floor refinishing restores older floors with a durable finish that will last for years, and the clients can have their floors stained to achieve a different look during the process. Read more about How Dan’s Floor Store refinishes wood floors.

In our previous work, we had sanded and finished half of the wood flooring in their house and stained it a medium brown color.

Since the couple were taking a vacation, they asked if we could refinish the other thousand square feet of their residence while they were away. And so we did. First we prepared the rest of the worn wood flooring by sanding it, and then we stained it in the same exact color as the previous work, so there was the look of smooth continuity throughout their house.

Now the wood floors throughout the home have been restored to look like new again!

Screening and Re-coating Wood Flooring in Sawgrass Country Club

Screening and Re-coating is a wood floor maintenance procedure that helps wood flooring last even longer.

Screening and Re-coating a Wood Floor in Sawgrass Country ClubFor most wood floors, after 3 to 5 years, the finish has been scuffed by normal use, and our Screening and Re-coating process will restore the finish to like new, to last another 3 to 5 years.

“Screening” (sanding with clog-resistant sanding disks) removes the wood floor finish without cutting into the wood itself. Polyurethane finish creates a non-penetrating plastic coating that sits on top of the wood flooring. We see better results when we screen a wood floor with a finish that is worn, scratched or dull but the wood beneath is not stained or damaged.

About 5 years ago, Dan’s Floor Store installed wood flooring in this home in the Sawgrass Country Club neighborhood. The client consulted Dan, asking what to do because the finish on their floors had become worn and scratched. They were thinking the wood flooring would need to be replaced. After we inspected their wood flooring, the client was very happy to learn that the floors could be screened and re-coated for a fraction of the cost (and time) of replacing their wood floors.

The client’s wood floors of both plank and parquet Red Oak flooring, with Early American stain by Minwax, turned out great. The client was very happy to see how nice their finished floors looked. Nice to be able to save the client some money while extending the life of their wood flooring.

Cupped Wood Floor Refinishing Project in Mandarin

Severely cupped wood floor, before refinishingWe were asked to look at a wood floor in the Beauclerc community, in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville, Florida, that exhibited severe cupping. We took this photo of the client’s severly cupped floor, prior to refinishing.

A cupped wood floor occurs when flooring absorbs excessive moisture on the underside of the flooring planks, causing expansion and cupping, with the edges of the planks raised. Moisture can also cause wood flooring to exhibit a condition called crowning, in which the outer edges of the wood planks shrink and become lower than the middle of each plank. Dan’s Floor Store can refinish wood floors with either condition. A worn wood floor may be able to be refinished, and damaged wood floors can be repaired for beautiful results.

This was a prefinished aluminum oxide finished floor that was severely cupped. The repair areas (new wood) were filled in upon our arrival. Since the floor had a severe cup to it, we had to cross sand the floor a total of five times on alternating 45 degree angles to the grain of the wood, in order to achieve a flat floor surface.

We continued our refinishing process with rough and fine sanding (with the grain of the wood), then scraped corners and buffed, in preparation for a MinWax Golden Oak stain.

After the stain had dried, we applied 3 coats of polyurethane finish. Our client was very happy to see the results of our refinishing procedure.

Wood Floor Refinishing project in San Marco

Solid Red Oak Wood Floor - San Marco - afterRecently Dan’s Floor Store was asked to refinish some old wood floors in the beautiful, historic San Marco neighborhood, here in Jacksonville, Florida.

These solid Red Oak wood floors had been exposed to decades of wear and abuse. You can see the indentation, scratches, and worn finish in these pre-refinishing photos.

Dan did a thorough inspection of the client’s wood flooring. Then he told the client that we could refinish these floors so they could enjoy them for years and years ahead.

Their solid wood flooring had not been damaged to the degree that we recommended replacement.

Dan and the client looked through our samples of recommended quality wood stains and finishes. We agreed which ones would fit the decor of their home and hold up for the foot traffic planned for these rooms. A Minwax Honey stain was selected, with a polyurethane finish.

We followed our Dan’s Floor Store Quality Wood Floor Refinishing process. Our wood floor refinishing project made these rooms unavailable to the client for a total of 7 days, during which we were actually in their home 4 work days. (The additional project time was required to allow the stain and the finish to completely dry.)

We appreciate being able to restore floors like this to better-than-new appearance, giving our clients beautiful flooring for their homes and businesses.
