Dan’s Floor Store was called to a home located in the Davis Shores community in St. Augustine, Florida. These homeowners are repeat clients. They called us in the spring of 2017 to replace the Red Oak plank floors with Walnut pegs in their home that were water damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
During the fall of the 2017 hurricane season, Hurricane Irma came through Northeastern Florida, wreaking a lot of damage. The new wood floors were water damaged as well. Our clients called on Dan’s Floor Store to help restore their home, replacing their damaged wood floor with Red Oak Plank Floors with Walnut Pegs.
The home is located the waterfront of Mantanzas Bay. The home owners have a nice view of Castillo de San Marco, right across the Bay.
First our crew removed all of the water damaged wood flooring from the home, and ordered solid, unfinished select Red Oak plank flooring in 4″. 6″, and 8″ random widths from one of our sources.
We had previously used drilling jigs to match the unique peg pattern in the old Red Oak wooden floor. We made new drilling jigs to help us save the peg pattern for the holes we would use for the 3/4″ Walnut pegs in the new Red Oak flooring.
Then our crew went to work and drilled all the peg holes in the new Red Oak plank flooring.
We organized and stacked the drilled planks to make it easier to find the ones we wanted during installation.
Next we installed the Red Oak plank flooring.
You can see nickels sitting between some planks during installation in some of the photos. Those nickels create expansion joints in the wood flooring; helping us leave room for the wood to properly expand and contract, so the wood flooring lasts longer. Expansion joints are just one example of how our Dan’s Floor Store complies with National Wood Flooring (NWFA) standards to provide our clients with beautiful results and long lasting wood floors.
With the new Red Oak wood flooring installed, we will have to wait several months (because the home is so close to the water) to allow the solid wood flooring to acclimate. Then we can come back, install the Walnut pegs, stain and finish the new Red Oak Plank Floors with Walnut Pegs.
New wood flooring (either solid wood, engineered wood, or laminate), or refinishing the wood floors in your home or business office will improve it’s looks and value. Just give Dan’s Floor Store a call 904.887.8303 to make an appointment for a free consultation and estimate.

Weave-in Repair Install Refinish Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, Wood Floor Refinishing, Wood Floor Repair /by adminThis job took place in Moultrie Foreside, a community near the water off of US1 on Moultrie Creek in south St. Augustine.
Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to help with a home improvement project involving solid wood flooring with plywood subfloor underneath it.
The home had already existing Red Oak select grade flooring, all running on a diagonal in the upper level. Our clients were re-doing their whole kitchen and connecting on in the lower living room but we are knocking out an old existing bedroom to enlarge the open space.
We put down our vapor membrane when installing the plywood base for the new Red Oak flooring, using our Hilti DX2 nail guns.
Next our crew installed the solid Red Oak select grade wood flooring.
Adding Red Oak to finish the transition and steps between upper and lower floors.
There was a massive amount of weave-in repair work in the wood flooring for this job, as evidenced in the photos. Also the floor running on a diagonal had to come around and meet up. There was a room with a fireplace where we did a weave-in repair, as well as repairing some old pet damage to the wood flooring in the center of the living room. The lower floor had 3 inch wide Red Oak select flooring. The upper floor was 2 1/4 inch wide Red Oak select. Both sizes of Red Oak select wood flooring were provided by Oak Crest Lumber.
Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work is done in compliance with National Wood Flooring Association standards, in order to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. As one example of NWFA practices, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.
We needed to give the new solid Red Oak wood floors time to acclimate before sanding and finishing them, and sanding and refinishing the repaired Red Oak floors. We will give the new wood floors about month to acclimate, and then return and finish this project.

Weave-in Repair Red Oak Flooring, Sand and Finish – Eagle Harbor
/in Wood Floor Repair /by adminA contractor we had worked with previously called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to help with a home improvement project they were doing on a home in the Eagle Harbor neighborhood in Fleming Island, Florida.
The contractor was remodeling the kitchen area of the home. The scope of their project included knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the living room, opening up the space. So they called Dan’s Floor Store to weave-in repair Red Oak flooring in the home.
For a weave-in repair, we install planks of wood flooring to fill in gaps in the flooring left when the wall and kitchen cabinets were removed. Our weave-in repair will create a continuous appearance to the wood flooring.
Between the subfloor laid bare by the kitchen redesign, and the removed wall between the kitchen and the living room, we wove approximately 200 boards into the existing rotary peeled Red Oak wood flooring.
After all of our weave-in repair red oak flooring work was completed, our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded and finished the floor.
We used oil-modified Bona DriFast Sealer for the first coat. Then we followed up with durable Bona Traffic HD matte for the final coats.
When we finished this project, the homeowner and our contractor loved the workmanship and how good the Red Oak floor looked. And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Restoring Water Damaged Red Oak Flooring – Atlantic Beach
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminThe owner of a home on Beach Avenue in Atlantic Beach called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation and estimate, to restore their water damaged Red Oak flooring. Wind and water from Hurricane Irma had created a slight cupping of the wood floor at the front door. Also the homeowner did not like that he could not see the grain of the wood in his black stained wood floor.
(A close-up of the refinished Red Oak flooring is show above, right.)
We concluded that the prior floor man double or triple stained the wood floor to get the color that dark, a process which covered the grain of the wood entirely.
As our crew rough sanded the water damaged Red Oak flooring I could see that it was a 5″ wide, rotary peeled Red Oak flooring, from our experience dealing with wood flooring from a wide variety of vendors. I also noted the wood flooring had a mineral streak, and was made of a lower grade of wood, but we can work with that.
After sanding some of the floor, we put down a “pop grain” Dura Seal True Black stain sample, and it looked great! The wood grain in the flooring was clearly visible, and the color was just what the client wanted!
Our Dan’s Floor Store crew completed all of the sanding (and hand scraping the corners) of the floors. Then we “popped the grain” of the wood by rubbing the sanded wooden floor with water dampened cloths. Water from the damp cloths raises the grain of the wood, allowing the stain to penetrate deeper into the wood.
Next we applied the applied the Dura Seal True Black stain. We had to give the black stain extra dry time because that stain is super pigmented.
Our crew finished these floors with two coats of Bona Mega Clear HD satin (which eliminates an amber tint to the wood). We buffed the first two coats of Mega Clear HD to get a smooth surface. Then we applied a final finish coat of Bona Traffic HD satin for a super durable finish.
Our client was very happy with the new look for his wood floor. Before we even completed finishing his floor, our client had given me several referrals to his friends, for work on their wood floors. I can proudly say that our client was thrilled with his refinished wood floor.

Refinishing Old Wooden Floors – Jacksonville Beach
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminRefinishing the wood floors in your home or business is an opportunity to give your place a new look, and that’s exactly what these clients did for their Jacksonville Beach home.
Their home was built in the 1950’s, with a medium brown stain applied throughout the home. Our clients had a color in mind for their floor prior to my arrival to meet with them and provide an estimate for this project. Just knowing what they wanted prior to our meeting was very helpful. They told me that they wanted to make their wood floors as white as possible. To achieve this look, I chose:
After our crew rough sanded the medium brown stain off the wooden flooring, the species became distinguishable. The wood flooring in most of the home was a mix of Red and White Oak. And this flooring was also a mix of different grades, ranging from Number 1 common to Clear grade. The kitchen floor was an entirely different specie from the rest of the house – Knotty Heart Pine.
We went through all of the stages of sanding on these floors. We had to start with 36 grit sand paper (for the rough cut). Then we went to 50 grit (intermediate cut). Next we used 100 grit (fine cut). After this sanding, along with hand scraping all the corners of the rooms, we buffed the flooring out using 100 grit with the Bona Multidisk.
The next step in refinishing these old wooden floors was “popping the grain” of the wood by rubbing the floor with water dampened cloths. Popping the grain of the wood flooring raises the grain to allow a stain to penetrate deeper into the wood. This step of popping the grain is a MUST with a white stain, because of how pigmented this color is.
Then our crew applied Bona White, then 3 coats of Bona Nordic, followed by a final coat (after buffing the floor smooth) of Bona Traffic HD extra matte.
We are proud to say that our clients were elated with the transformation of their old wooden floors, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients!

Refinishing Old Heart Pine Flooring – Springfield
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminFor just about any business, it’s always nice when a previous client appreciates your work and calls you back to help them with another home improvement project.
Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 had done flooring work for this client previously. They appreciate the quality and value of our work, and the timeliness of our progress to completion, so they called us again for this project.
Approximately 2300 square feet of Old Heart Pine flooring in this home in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville was in rough shape.
Fortunately, this was old solid Heart Pine plank flooring, and could be refinished.
Our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded the old flooring.
Then we finished the floors with durable Bona Traffic HD , providing a durable, long lasting surface. Bona Traffic HD is a quality scratch, scuff, and chemical resistant finish.
Our client was very pleased with their refinished Old Heart Pine Flooring, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients!

Wire Brushed White Oak Flooring and Staircase – Marshview
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, wood staircase installation /by adminThis Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring installation and staircase project took place in a home in Marshview.
Marshview is a community just north of Vilano Beach, directly off the Coastal Highway.
The carpeting which is installed in most homes starts to wear and become harder to keep clean after three or four years.
This home improvement project entailed removing the existing carpet in four different rooms and adjacent closets and staircase, and replacing the carpeting with wire brushed White Oak flooring and solid White Oak stair treads.
Our client chose a 9 inch wide by 9/16 inch thick wire brushed European White Oak with a natural top and white stain in the soft grain. This wire brushed White Oak flooring is a product of Nuvelle, in the Camelot collection – Oak Mist.
After removing the carpet from the floors and stairs, we leveled the subfloor, installed the White Oak flooring, and prepared the staircase for the new stair treads.
The staircase required 29 solid White Oak stair treads. We wire brushed the tread after sanding them so they had the same texture as the new wood flooring. Next we stained the stair treads white to mimic the flooring, using white stain in the grain. Our crew finished the new White Oak stair treads with Bona Traffic matte.
There were two landings installed, which we had to do in place. We usually pre-finish the stair treads, prior to installation (to eliminate getting any stain up on skirt boards), and then install them.
Our customers were elated with the outcome of this wood flooring installation and staircase project, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy customers.

Brazilian Cherry Staircase with Wood Flooring Installation
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, wood staircase installation, wood staircase refinishing /by adminDan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 sells and installs a wide variety of wood flooring, but we also install wood flooring that our clients purchase elsewhere, and need to have installed in their home or business.
And it always makes us feel good when someone we have done work for calls us to help with another project for their home or business.
This home improvement project took place in a home in Hampton Park, off Gate Parkway in Baymeadows neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. Our client is an existing customer, so this is repeat business (3rd project for this client). They wanted to replace carpeting with wood in several areas of the home.
After removing all the carpeting and padding, we prepared the subfloor and staircase, and installed our client’s wood flooring in their home’s upstairs sitting area and hallways that lead to the upstairs bedrooms.
For this Brazilian Cherry staircase, our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded, stained, and finished 17 new Brazilian Cherry stair treads and one landing to blend with the new flooring. We also sanded, stained and finished the existing Red Oak handrail and newel posts to blend with the new Brazilian Cherry stair treads we installed.
To make the wood on the Brazilian Cherry staircase blend with the new wood flooring, we “popped” the grain in the stair treads after sanding the wood. Then we stained the treads with a custom stain that we created, a 50/50 mix of DuraSeal Red Mahogany and Sedona Red. We finished the stair treads, rail, and newel posts with a top coat of durable Bona Mega Clear semi gloss.
Our client was very pleased with their new wood floors, and how good their staircase wood looked. And having happy clients makes us happy too!

Refinishing Solid Red Oak Flooring – Jacksonville Beach
/in Wood Floor Refinishing, wood staircase refinishing /by adminAs part of the renovation of a home built in Jacksonville Beach in the 1970’s, the owners wanted the solid Red Oak flooring refinished. They contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to refinish their wood floor, adding a gray stain for a sort of driftwood, beachy look (since the home is near the Intracoastal Waterway).
Our Dan’s Floor Store crew found an immense amount of wax built up on this wood floor. Waxing floors was an old fashioned way that people used to use to finish and protect their floors. Now, polyurethane is the more commonly used finish coating. Polyurethane is longer lasting and more durable than wax.
To remove the old wax build up and smooth the solid red oak flooring, we sanded the floor. Our crew started with 36 grit sandpaper. Then went to 50 grit, and finished with 100 grit for a smooth finish. We followed this sequence with both the edger sanders as well as the big Lagler-Hummel belt sanding machine. Our crew hand scraped all of the corners of the wood floor. Then we buffed the entire area with 100 grit sandpaper.
To get the look our clients wanted in their solid red oak flooring, we applied a little water to “pop” the wood grain. This is done prior to applying the stain. This technique allows the stain to penetrate deeper into the wood, resulting in a darker, richer look than if the stain were simply applied, straight out of the can. “Popping” the grain is really a must when applying a pastel color such as gray. The stain we used was a DuraSeal Classic Gray, that we modified for a custom shade that appears slightly darker.
After allowing the proper drying time for the pop and stain, our crew finished these solid Red Oak wood floors with three coats of Bona Traffic HD with a matte finish. Bona Traffic HD is a quality scuff, scratch, and chemical resistant finish.
We also sanded, stained, and refinished the adjacent stair treads to match.
Our clients were very happy with the new look of their solid Red Oak flooring and stairs. And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Installing Maple Flooring and Matching Stair Treads – Sawgrass Country Club
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, wood staircase installation /by adminDan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 enjoys being able to participate in home improvement projects. New or refinished wood flooring can give a home a whole new look. These clients wanted to replace the existing flooring in their home with wood flooring.
The project began when our clients visited our Dan’s Floor Store showroom in Ponte Vedra and selected Nuvelle‘s Blowing Rock Maple Cognac for their home. Their selection is 6 1/2″ wide, prefinished, hand-scraped Maple hardwood flooring. They also wanted solid Maple stair treads installed and finished to match their new wood flooring.
Work on this project began with our crew removing 2,000 square feet of wood and tile, and another 700 square feet of carpeting from the floors of a home in the Sawgrass Country Club community.
Our Dan’s Floor Store crew did a massive amount of leveling on first floor subfloor. We level the subfloor prior to installing wood floors to create a flat surface, which minimizes damage to the wood and maximizes the flooring life. Upstairs, we sanded the plywood subfloor seams to provide a level surface for the new wood flooring.
We installed the new Maple flooring on the first and second floors of the home.
We selected solid Maple stair treads, perfectly matched to the prefinished hand-scraped Maple hardwood flooring. Our crew first sanded these stair treads. Then we “popped” the grain in the treads with a little water, to open up the wood grains to better absorb the stain. The crew first applied DuraSeal Espresso stain, followed by a second coat of equal parts of DuraSeal Red Mahogany and Antique Brown. Our staining process infused a touch of red that was prevalent in the prefinished Maple flooring that the clients selected.
These clients were thrilled with their new Maple floors and stairs! And Dan’s Floor Store is always happy when we have happy clients.
