The wood floors of many homes in St. Augustine, Florida were water damaged in the fall of 2016 during Hurricane Matthew. Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 has been actively working to help as many of these local homeowners as possible to restore their wood floors as part of getting on with their lives.
This water damaged heart pine flooring refinishing project took place in an older home on the Mantanzas riverfront in Saint Augustine. This home is one of many charming buildings along Avenida Menendez. The home is located just south of the landmark Bridge of Lions which crosses the Mantanzas River.
The home was build in the 1800s, and has retained the original heart pine floors.
Heart Pine wood is the heartwood, the dense, center-most wood of the long leaf pine tree, and it is very hard and strong, with beautiful coloring and figure patterns.
Hurricane Matthew put the wood floors in this old home under water. We sanded and refinished the wood flooring in the home next door to this one about a month ago.
We have been contracted to refinish the water damaged wood floors in two more homes on this street, within three houses of one another in our schedule, due to the same storm.
The wood floors have had many months to dry out, prior to our arrival.
We sanded the water damaged heart pine flooring down to the bare wood. Even as old as this heart pine wood flooring is, heart pine can be very sappy. And the sap gums up our sanding papers. So we end up using a lot more sanding paper for heart pine refinishing jobs.
Our crew finished the sanded heart pine flooring with 3 coats of Bona Woodline satin polyurethane.
The refinished old heart pine flooring looks great!
Our customer was very pleased with the outcome of our refinishing work. And Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients.

Water Damaged Pine Floor Refinishing – Historic St. Augustine
/in Wood Floor Refinishing, Wood Floor Repair /by adminOwners of a home in historic St. Augustine, called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation on their water damaged pine wood floor. The home is located just south of the Bridge of Lions, on the Avineda Menendez, which is right on the Mantanzas riverfront.
In the fall of 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused water damage to the wood floor in this and many other homes in St. Augustine that are near the water.
After looking at their water damaged pine floor, we told the homeowners their old pine floors could be saved. Our Dan’s Floor Store crew could repair and refinish them for years more useful life.
This is the fifth home on this street in which we have refinished the wooden floors, after they were water warped and damaged by hurricane Matthew.
Getting an early start on the day’s work, our crew was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise over the Mantanzas riverfront.
The project home has one room with a floor of Southern Yellow Pine. A majority of the wooden floors were Heart Pine, original from circa late 1800s. We had to repair several areas of wood flooring. Our Dan’s Floor Store team began sanding the wooden floors at a 45 degree angle to the grain several times to get them flat again. After we had the wood floors flat, we sanded them with the grain to prepare them for finishing.
We added an orange tint stain to the repaired areas, to get them to visually match the adjacent Heart Pine flooring.
To finish and protect these old pine wood floors, our crew first applied a coat of oil modified Bona DriFast Sealer Then we applied two coats or Bona Woodline Polyurethane for a tough protective coat with a slight amber tone.
Our clients were very happy to see how nice their old pine wood floors look now. And Dan’s Floor Store loves to have happy clients!

Pine Wood Flooring Refinish – Downtown Jacksonville FL
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminOne of our prior Dan’s Floor Store clients called us 904.887.8303 to refinish (“sand and finish”) the wood flooring in a place west of downtown Jacksonville, Florida.
The project wood floor was about 500 square feet in area. The floor was a combination of Heart Pine and Knotty Yellow Pine wood.
Some of the pine wood flooring had been painted, so we had to “cut” (sand) the wood flooring at a 45 degree angle. Then our crew came back and sanded the pine wood flooring with the grain to prepare it for finishing.
We have found that we get best results with all heart pine flooring when we use Bona DriFast Sealer (oil modified), followed with Bona Woodline Polyurethane satin for second and third coats of finish.
This is the fifth job we have done for this customer and he was very happy with the outcome.

Birch Wood Flooring Install – Palencia
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminWanting a fresh look for their Palencia condo, homeowners contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to replace the existing tile and carpet with wood flooring.
The first step on this home improvement project was demolition; removal and disposal of the original tile and contractor grade carpeting. The fact that this condo is on the third floor of the building gave our crew plenty of exercise with this project.
With old tile and carpeting removed, then we commenced leveling the concrete subfloor of the condo. There was a large amount of leveling to be done before we could install the wood flooring. Wood flooring requires a flat surface to minimize damage to the wood and maximize the flooring life. Our Dan’s Floor Store crew levels all concrete prior to wood floor installations.
Our clients selected engineered Chesapeake Countryside Birch wood flooring in Grey Fog for their condo floors.
We chose Bostik Vapor-Lock hardwood floor adhesive for this project. Bostick Vapor-Lock is good for moisture control. But in this application, we chose Vapor-Lock for its sound deadening barrier since this unit is a third floor concrete stack condo.
To add an interesting and creative twist in the flooring installation, Dan’s Floor Store owner Dan DiCarlo suggested running the new birch wood flooring front to back in the foyer, and then changing direction at the header boards. The owners liked the concept. Each flooring plank was then grooved at a 45 degree angle, coming off the header board to achieve the visual effect.
Our clients love their new birch wood floor, and Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Red Oak Clear Grade Flooring – Refinishing and Installing – San Marco
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminA homeowner in the historic San Marco community in Jacksonville, Florida called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation and estimate. They needed to have their old Red Oak clear grade flooring stained and refinished.
They also needed wood flooring installed in an addition to their home. And they wanted the new wood flooring to blend with the refinished existing wood floors. They contracted Dan’s Floor Store to help them accomplish these home improvements.
For one part of this wood flooring project, we sanded and refinished 1600 square feet of existing Red Oak clear grade flooring in the home. The old Red Oak flooring was very cupped. Our crew had to approach the old wood floor at a 45° angle twice with the sander in order to flatten the flooring. Then we rough cut the flooring straight with the sander.
For the other part of this project, our Dan’s Floor Store crew was to install new Red Oak clear grade flooring in the addition to the home. Before we could begin to install the new wood flooring, our crew installed plywood with a moisture barrier over the concrete slab subfloor. We installed the plywood and moisture barrier to protect the new wood flooring from moisture and in compliance with the National Wood Flooring Association and American Plywood Association standards.
The species wood flooring for this project was Red Oak clear grade. Clear grade Red Oak wood flooring was used a lot in the 1950s.
These days, mostly select Red Oak wood flooring is used.
If you held select and clear grades of flooring side by side, you would quickly see the difference; Red Oak clear grade wood doesn’t have any knots in it.
We installed a header board between the old wood flooring and the new wood flooring that we would install in the addition. Our Dan’s Floor Store crew lined all of our new Red Oak clear grade flooring boards up to the existing wood flooring that merged with the header board. And used Woodwise Full Trowel Filler for small variations in the wood flooring planks.
To get the effect our client wanted, we used the refinishing technique of “popping” (opening up) the grain of the wood with water prior to applying the stain. This extra step allowed the stain to penetrate deeper, creating a deeper, darker tone. Then we applied Medium Brown stain by DuraSeal.
Next our Dan’s Floor Store crew applied Bona DriFast Sealer for our first coat of polyurethane on the stained wood flooring. Then we buffed the Sealer coat down and applied two coats of Bona Traffic HD extra matte.
We believe this is one of the best jobs we’ve done all year; this Red Oak wood flooring turned out absolutely beautiful! The homeowner was super super happy and Dan’s Floor Store likes having happy clients!

Refinishing Hickory Flooring – St. Augustine
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminDan’s Floor Store is thankful to have been able to help many First Coast homeowners and businesses with wood floors that were water damaged during hurricane Matthew (which occurred in the fall of 2016). While not always the case, often the wood floors could be restored with repairs and refinishing. Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 offers a free consultation and estimate for wood floor installations, repairs, refinishing, and for tile work.
Owner of a home situated on the marsh just west of the St. Augustine Amphitheater called us for a consultation on their water damaged wood floor. As a result of their wood floor being under water during the storm, we could see some slight cupping of their hickory wood floor.
We were happy to tell them that their hickory wood flooring did not need to be replaced, we could sand and refinish it to last for many more years of service. Refinishing Hickory flooring is certainly in our Dan’s Floor Store repertoire.
Their natural Hickory wood floors by Anderson had been prefinished with aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide provides a very hard finish which does not sand off easily for refinishing; it ruins our sandpaper quickly. Some of the photos show how the finish turns white but is not fully removed after one rough cut of sandpaper. In all, we made three sanding cuts to remove the aluminum oxide from the Hickory flooring.
The homeowner chose an oil-modified polyurethane Bona Woodline satin to finish their floor. For Bona oil-based polyurethane, the procedure that we use to get best results is to only do one coat per day and abrade the floors between the coats. This process results in solid bonding and cleaner, smooth finish results.
Our customer was “over the moon” to be able to save/salvage their hickory wood flooring. And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Red Oak Flooring Refinishing – Cimarrone Country Club
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminWhen homeowners in the Cimarrone Country Club in St. Johns County, Florida were ready for a new look for their wood floors, they called Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303.
We offer a free consultation and estimate for wood floor installations, wood floor refinishing, and tile work. Call 904.887.8303 to make your appointment.
They had pre-finished Mannington wood floor; rotary peeled Red Oak with an aluminum oxide finish.
Based on our consultation with our clients, our crew sanded their wood floor down (to remove the original finish), and then gave their floor a dark gray stain and a durable finish.
After staining the clients’ Red Oak floors, we finished them with Bona Mega Clear HD satin. This is a waterborne wood floor finish dries clear with no ambering, so it will not yellow over time.
Beautiful results! Our staining and finishing turned out very, very even. Our clients were as happy as we were with the new look on their Red Oak floors, and we like having happy clients.

Brushed European White Oak Flooring Installation – St. Augustine
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminDan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 was called to help with a home improvement project in St. Augustine, Florida, right across from the World Golf Village King and Bear golf course.
For this project, our clients were replacing their old carpets with wire brushed European White Oak flooring by Forest Accents flooring.
They chose the Canterbury pattern, a 3/8″ thick by 5″ wide, random length engineered wood floor with white stain into the wood grain and a darker, caramel brownish stain on top.
Very nice!
After removing the old carpeting, we did a moisture evaluation of the concrete slab with our concrete moisture meter. This is a routine precaution for Dan’s Floor Store, prior to wood flooring installations. A concrete slab subfloor with a high moisture content can damage wood flooring.
As is often the case when installing wood flooring on a concrete slab, to replace carpeting, we did a large amount of floor leveling. Having a leveled subfloor helps the wood flooring that we install have a longer service life.
Prior to installing the wood flooring planks, we popped a series of chalk lines to make sure the wood flooring installation runs square.
Our Dan’s Floor Store crew used Bostik Pro-Cure professional urethane adhesive to install the brushed European White Oak flooring on the concrete slab subfloor of the clients’ home.
We finished this project off by installing T moldings around the tile area and shoe molding against the baseboards.
This job was another great wood flooring installation for Dan’s Floor Store! And our clients were very happy with their new wood flooring, too!

Refinishing Stair Treads to Mimic Wood Look Tile Floor – Atlantic Beach
/in wood staircase refinishing /by adminBeach Avenue homeowners living in Atlantic Beach were commissioning some home improvement projects.
Among them, they wanted to simulate the appearance of their wood look tile flooring on their wooden stair treads.
They contacted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation.
After seeing the tile flooring and their stair treads, we recommended refinishing the Red Oak stair treads to simulate their wood look floor tiles.
Our crew began refinishing stair treads by sanding the stair treads down to bare wood. Then we proceeded to wire brush the treads to thin out the soft grain. We painted the treads white, then lightly sanded the treads. Some white paint was retained in the grain patterns that were enhanced by the wire brushing. Next we stained the treads using Rubio Monocoat with a stain called “Oyster”. And we finished the stair treads with a coat of Bona NordicSeal and two coats of Bona Traffic Extra Matte HD.
We followed the same process to refinish the stair hand railing, so that it also simulated the wood look floor tiles.
Needless to say, this customer was thrilled with their refinished stair treads and hand railing, and with our workmanship on this project. And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients.

White Oak Character Grade Flooring Install – Palencia
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminHome owners in Palencia Golf and Country Club community wanted to replace about 1,100 square feet of tile flooring in their home with White Oak Character Grade Flooring. So they contacted Dan’s Floor Store of Ponte Vedra 904.887.8303 for this home improvement project.
Our clients selected 9/16″ thick x 7 1/2″ wide wire brushed White Oak character grade wood flooring with a natural appearance, by Naturally Aged Flooring.
First we removed the existing tile flooring. The concrete slab subfloor of the home required an immense amount of leveling (as we have found to be a usual necessity) after the tile removal was completed.
Dan’s Floor Store cares about our wood flooring installations. We want to make sure that the new wood flooring lays flat with no hollow spots beneath. Leveling will help the wood flooring last longer. And leveling also helps the wood flooring hold up well during future sanding (for refinishing). We take pride in all of our work so we routinely level all substrate prior to wood flooring installations like this. We finished this job by installing shoe molding, and thresholds at the doorways where the new wood flooring met the tiled and carpeted floors in adjacent rooms.
This tile flooring removal and oak wood flooring installation project took our Dan’s Floor Store crew about a week to complete.
Our clients are very pleased with their new White Oak Character grade flooring, and Dan’s Floor Store really likes having happy clients.
