Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to refinish and repair 3,800 square feet of Red Oak wood floor and 18 stair treads in a charming old home being renovated in the Avondale community of Jacksonville, Florida.
Here are some photos showing the old wood floors before we started to refinish them. The middle photos shows our new Lagler-Hummel Belt Sanding machine, next to our older one.
They do a good job sanding wood floors.
As part of this Red Oak wood floor refinishing project, we had to remove and replace some damaged areas of the wood flooring, using the weave-in process to achieve a uniform look for the client’s wood floors.
Based on our experience in restoring and repairing wood floors in old homes, we chose rift and quarter sawn Red Oak wood flooring planks by Shamrock Plank Flooring as a good match to the existing wood flooring. We used the Red Oak planks for the weave-in repair, to replace the damaged wood flooring. There were actually many weave-in areas, repairing damaged wood flooring on this project.
After weaving-in the new Red Oak planks, we sanded and hand scraped the floors, the stair treads, and landings.
First our Dan’s Floor Store crew used the technique of applying a little water to “pop” the grain of the wood, prior to applying the stain to the Red Oak wood floor and stair treads. This extra step allows the stain to penetrate deeper, to get a darker, richer stain effect than just using the stain, straight out of the can. Then we applied MinWax stain – blending 2 parts Coffee brown to 1 part medium brown.
We also mimicked the stair tread nosing from the 1950’s by handcrafting and modifying new nosing to achieve a near exact look.
For the finish coat on these floors, we used Bona Mega Clear HD for our first build-up coat. Our crew will be back in a few weeks to put the final two coats on this wood flooring restoration project.
As our Dan’s Floor Store crew was leaving the project home, we just had to catch a few photos of the serene view of the St. Johns River, as seen from behind the project home.

Refinishing Old Heart Pine Floors – Springfield
/in Wood Floor Refinishing, Wood Floor Repair, wood staircase refinishing /by adminThis Dan’s Floor Store wood floor refinishing project took place in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, in the historic Springfield neighborhood.
The home was circa 1913, with the original flooring, old Heart Pine floors.
Some of the old wood floors were covered with so much paint and carpet glue, they did not resemble wood flooring when our crew arrived on site.
We also refinished the old wooden stair treads.
First some of the old Heart Pine flooring planks were damaged and had to be replaced, using by weaving-in new wood planks.
Following weave-in repairs, we sanded 1225 square feet of the old Heart Pine floors and the stair treads.
Then we finished the wood flooring with 3 coats of Bona Oil Modified Satin to keep the authenticity of this rustic old floor.
This job required lots of sandpaper and time to complete, and the results are stunning! The homeowner was thrilled with the outcome of this Dan’s Floor Store old wood floor refinishing project.

Replacing Water Damaged Red Oak Flooring – St. Augustine
/in Wood Floor Refinishing, Wood Floor Repair, wood staircase refinishing /by adminHomeowners contracted Dan’s Floor Store to replace water damaged red oak flooring after the lower floor of their home took on and was damaged by water during Hurricane Matthew last fall.
The water damaged the subflooring in some areas, as well as the wood flooring. Before we could install the new wood flooring, we tore out 650 square feet of plywood subfloor and water damaged Red Oak (solid) wood flooring. Then our Dan’s Floor Store crew installed new plywood subfloor, with moisture barrier to protect the Red Oak new wood flooring.
For this project, we replaced the water damaged red oak flooring with 2 1/4″ strip unfinished Red Oak number 1 Common by Shamrock Plank Flooring and weaved the new red oak planks into existing, undamaged flooring.
After allowing a few weeks for the new wood flooring to acclimate, we came back to sand and finish the floor.
Our clients took this as an opportunity to give the wood floors and stair treads of their home a new look. They wanted a dark brown color for their floors and stair treads.
First our Dan’s Floor Store crew sanded the wood flooring and stair treads in the home.
To achieve the look they wanted, we next popped the grain of the sanded wood. Our crew conditioned floor with wet rags prior to staining. Popping raises the grain of the wood to allow the stain to penetrate deeper in the wood thus making the color ten times darker than stain could be straight out of the can.
To achieve the dark brown wood color for our clients, we used DuraSeal Espresso stain, and it turned out fabulous.
Then, for a durable, long lasting finish, we applied Bona waterborne finishes (Bona Mega Clear HD Satin for first two coats, followed by Bona Traffic Satin for the final coat).
And then we trimmed out the job with new shoe molding and new stain matched thresholds at all exiting doorways.
Our clients were thrilled with the new look of their Red Oak wood floors and stair treads, and Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients!

Engineered Red Oak – Install Sand Finish – Atlantic Beach
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, Wood Floor Refinishing, wood staircase refinishing /by adminAfter a free on-site consultation and estimate, Dan’s Floor Store was contracted to install new engineered Red Oak flooring in a home in Atlantic Beach, and refinish an existing wood floor and stair treads.
The client wanted their new wood flooring installed on a portion of their home that has a suspended slab subfloor. The suspended slab of concrete was about 3/4 of an inch lower than the surface of the wood flooring that was existing in a different portion of their home. We took care of that 3/4 inch difference in height with a combination of floor leveling and the thickness of the new wood flooring planks.
Our wood flooring installation projects usually include the step of leveling the subfloor prior to installing new wood flooring. A leveled subfloor will prevent damage to the wood flooring.
The client’s selection of a 5/8 of an inch engineered Shamrock Red Oak common number one wood flooring. This Red Oak flooring has a 5mm dry sawn face (wear layer) that adds longer life and maintains value.
Our client liked the concept of turning the new Red Oak wood flooring planks in the opposite direction to that of the existing wood planks, so that’s what we did. Diagonal placement and changing directions of the planks add layers of interest to the client’s wood floors.
After the new engineered Red Oak flooring installation was completed, our crew sanded the new wood flooring and the existing wood flooring.
Then our crew stained the wood flooring with Minwax Golden Oak stain.
We finished both of the client’s wood floors with three coats of Bona Mega Clear HD satin. Two header boards were installed during this flooring project. A photo of one of the installed header boards is included with other views of the finished Red Oak wood flooring installation.
Our crew also refinished our client’s stair treads as part of this project. We forgot to get photos of the finished treads when we went back to install thresholds, but they turned out very nice.
Needless to say the homeowner was happy with her new wood flooring and refreshed stair treads!

Refinishing Old Wooden Floors and Stairs in Historic Avondale
/in Wood Floor Refinishing, wood staircase refinishing /by adminRefinishing old wooden floors and stairs to their earlier elegance always gives a little more happiness to the Dan’s Floor Store crew when we are working with historically significant homes. We are helping to preserve our Country’s architectural history.
Dan’s Floor store has restored old wood floors in historic homes from Jacksonville to St. Augustine. For this project, we were refinishing wood floors and stair treads in the historic Avondale community of Jacksonville, Florida.
Avondale was developed as an exclusive subdivision of the Riverside neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida in the summer of 1920. Many of the Avondale homes were built in the Mediterranean Revival style.
This wood floor and stairs refinishing project consisted of sanding and refinishing:
– 1750 square feet of old Heart Pine wood flooring upstairs
– face-nailed White Oak flooring that was decoratively bordered by natural Walnut strip downstairs
– one room of old Heart Pine downstairs
– old Heart Pine stair treads
Here are some photos of the old wooden floor and stair treads, before we refinished them.
These are photos taken during sanding, then hand scraping, and finally applying new finish to the old wood floors and stair treads.
After thoroughly sanding all of these wood surfaces, we applied Bona DTS waterborne sealer for the first coat. Then, after the Bona sealer had thoroughly dried, we applied two coats of Bona Traffic HD satin for the final two coats of finish.
And here are photos of the refinished wooden floors and stair treads. Our clients were very happy with their refinished wood flooring and stair treads. And Dan’s Floor Store is very happy when our clients like our work.

Rotary Sawn Red Oak Floor Repair Sand and Stain – Ponte Vedra Beach
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, Wood Floor Refinishing, Wood Floor Repair, wood floor weave-in /by adminHomeowners in Ponte Vedra Beach contracted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 to help renovate the old floors in their home.
We started our work on this flooring project by removing the foyer tile and home office carpeting.
Most concrete subfloors require some leveling before we can install wood flooring planks and the subfloor slab in this home was no exception. The leveled surface of the concrete subfloor helps the wood flooring last longer.
We chose engineered, unfinished rotary sawn 2 1/4″ wide Red Oak plank flooring by Howell Hardwood Flooring for the foyer and home office, to perfectly mimic the existing flooring.
The existing wood flooring had a lot of moisture damage from prior pet urine stains so we recommended sanding and staining the new and existing wood flooring for a uniform look through the home. Our crew used a hand scraper to “pull” all the ends of the sanded planks, to eliminate any sanding marks on the wood floors.
We recommended a combination of coastal driftwood and gray stains by Bona for the home’s wood floors. Dan’s Floor Store crew applied three coats of the stain, which really helped to hide the moisture damage to the old wood flooring. We finished these sanded and stained wood floors with Bona Mega Clear HD.
These rotary sawn Red Oak plank floors turned out great; our clients are very happy with them. And Dan’s Floor Store likes having happy clients.

Pacific Madrone Wood Flooring Installation – Palencia
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminDan’s Floor Store was contracted by the owner of a home in the Palencia community in St. Augustine, Florida to install some new Pacific Madrone wood flooring in her home.
Her home had been one of the model homes for the community. First we had to remove the old laminate flooring that had been installed in her home. Then we could see that there was a moisture problem in the concrete slab. The slab had not been properly cured prior to installing 6 mm thick plastic as a moisture barrier. First we leveled the concrete subfloor with Bostik SL 150 self-leveling underlayment. (Most concrete slab floors must be leveled to prevent damage to the new wood flooring.) Then we solved the slab moisture problem by installing Bostik MVP (Moisture Vapor Protection) which also serves as an Anti-Fracture and Noise Reduction Membrane. Bostick MVP will protect the new wood flooring from damage by moisture from the slab.
Our client selected a beautiful 3″ wide x 9/16″ thick domestic wood flooring made of Pacific Madrone the wood of a broad leafed evergreen tree found in the Pacific Northwest of our United States. Although Madrone is not often used for flooring, this wood makes a beautiful floor, as you can see in the photos we took after installation. EcoTimber made this wood flooring, which is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified. FSC Certification is probably the hardest of certifications to get for wood flooring. Another plus for our client’s selection is that there is no formaldehyde in the adhesive that attaches the sub-ply to the veneer of this impressive Pacific Madrone wood flooring.
We also finished this job with white shoe molding around the baseboards and stained-to-match shoe molding around the kitchen cabinetry. As seen in the photos, we did not use any molding around the giant quartz fireplace. We created a seamless look with all of the Pacific Madrone wood flooring boards butted up tightly to the fireplace hearth.
Our customer was thrilled with her new wood floors. We all agreed that this was another great wood flooring job by Dan’s Floor Store.

French Oak Wood Flooring Installation – Odom’s Mill PVB
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminClients living in the Odom’s Mill subdivision of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida chose Dan’s Floor Store to improve their home by installing wood flooring. After removing their old carpeting and 500 square feet of tile flooring, we installed 2000 feet of French Oak wood flooring by Bella Cera.
First, we removed the the tile and carpeting. Then we could see the massive amount of floor leveling that needed to be done, in preparation for installing the new wood floors.
Bostik SL 150, self-leveling underlayment did a great job of leveling the subfloor. We took these photos while leveling the surface of the concrete subfloor.
For this French Oak wood flooring installation we used Bostik GreenForce adhesive and moisture control membrane. There was not a moisture problem in the concrete subfloor at this home. Our client said that they would feel better using the Bostik GreenForce adhesive with moisture control membrane so we did. Based on our years of experience, Dan’s Floor Store uses Bostik’s adhesives exclusively in our work.
Because of the 8 inch width of these French Oak wood flooring planks, we used special flooring straps to hold the planks together during installation.
Our client selected a grayish colored engineered, 8 inch wide by 5/8 inch thick Bella Cera French Oak hardwood designated Maracantonio in their Villa Borghese collection. This hardwood flooring is double smoked, wire brushed, hand distressed and hand stained, for an appearance that is very beachy and current.
We also removed all of the existing baseboards as part of this project. We replaced the old baseboards with 5 1/4 inch tall new baseboards and shoe molding.
Needless to say our customers were absolutely thrilled with the outcome of our work! They love their new wood floors! Reviewing this project, Dan was also very happy with the results he achieved. Dan is probably his own number one critic. Dan’s Floor Store focuses on the goal of the best craftsmanship possible with every Dan’s floor store project.

New Birch Stair Treads for World Golf Village Home
/in wood staircase installation, wood staircase refinishing /by adminBecause a couple who are prior clients and homeowners in the World Golf Village community loved the engineered wood flooring that we had installed for them, they called us back for a new project.
These clients wanted to improve their home by replacing the original stair treads with solid Birch stair treads. In addition, the clients wanted to have the new treads stained to match the wood flooring in their home.
This project involved installing 18 new solid birch stair treads. Some of the treads are very long. The stair treads range in size from the smallest, about 48″ long to the longer ones which are 60″ long to as much as 72″ long.
One of the signs of a well done stair tread installation is how tightly the treads fit to the skirt boards between the wall and the end of each stair tread. Dan’s Floor Store uses a precision jig that we built for making these cuts, to ensure each stair tread fits very tight to the skirt boards of the stairway.
For the bottom stair step, we filled out a frame that attached the subtread, to conform to the curved end of the bottom stair tread for the look that our clients wanted. Using some flexible riser material, we created a flawless look for the riser, including the curved surface of the step.
When Dan’s Floor Store installs and finishes new stair treads, or when we refinish existing stair treads, we pre-finish all of the treads to match the wood flooring prior to installing them. This approach ensures we won’t have any stain blotches / blemishes / over paint on the adjacent painted skirt board, and reduces some of the stain odor in the home. The stair case landings are usually the only portions of a stair case refinishing project that we have to sand, stain and finish in place.
The new birch stair treads turned out really beautiful! We stained them twice with Duraseal stain in Antique Brown. Then we finished the treads with three coats of Bona Mega Clear HD satin.

Installing Solid Red Oak Wood Flooring – Avondale
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, wood floor weave-in /by adminClients wanted to improve the appearance and the value of their home with wood flooring. They picked rift and quarter sawn unfinished Red Oak wood flooring in 2 1/4 wide planks by Oak Crest Lumber.
In order to provide a good base for the new Red Oak wood flooring in this home, and as shared in an earlier article, we previously installed plywood subfloor in the kitchen and several other areas of their home.
The new rift and quarter sawn unfinished Red Oak wood flooring was installed in the kitchen (which was formerly tile) and in several bedrooms, and closets. This Red Oak flooring installation included over 12 different weave-in sections to allow the new wood flooring to run apparently seamlessly from one room to the next.
Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work complies with NWFA standards to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. As an example, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.
Once the new Red Oak wood flooring has properly acclimated, we will sand all of the wood flooring in the home, and then refinish those floors. The sand and finish portion of this project will be shared in a future article on our Dan’s Floor Store website.
The client’s home has a nice view of the St. Johns River at sunset from the back yard of their home.
