After one of our Dan’s Floor Store free consultations, we were contracted to remove some of the old flooring and install new wood flooring in a home in the Glen Kernan Country Club community of Jacksonville, Florida.
Glen Kernan is a gated Country Club community, sitting in 600 acres of scenic, natural beauty near the Intracoastal waterway. There were some gorgeous scenes of nature to be seen during this job.
Home improvements like wood flooring and tile work can be a good investment to improve the overall appearance and value of a home.
Our crew removed 2500 square feet of mostly tile and wood flooring.
Our floor tile removal machine makes tile removal go a lot quicker. It saves us work and saves our clients money. You can see a video of our floor tile removal machine in action in our article, “White Stained White Oak Floors in Plantation Country Club PVB“.
Prior to installing the new wood flooring, we leveled the concrete slab subfloor.
The client selected random width, hand scraped, pre-finished Bella Cera Hickory wood flooring for the new look for their home.
We also sanded, hand scraped, and refinished the staircase and landing to match the new Hickory wood flooring, as part of this home improvement project.
Our clients love their new Hickory wood floors, and refinished wood stairs and landing, and we like having happy clients.
While we were talking about how much they liked the new look of their floor, stairs, and landing, the client, who is a professional baseball player, allowed us to get a photo to share of their 2016 National League All-Star jersey.
He is rightfully proud to have been selected to play in the 2016 All-Star game. Neat!

French Oak Wood Flooring Installation – Odom’s Mill PVB
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminFirst, we removed the the tile and carpeting. Then we could see the massive amount of floor leveling that needed to be done, in preparation for installing the new wood floors.
Bostik SL 150, self-leveling underlayment did a great job of leveling the subfloor. We took these photos while leveling the surface of the concrete subfloor.
For this French Oak wood flooring installation we used Bostik GreenForce adhesive and moisture control membrane. There was not a moisture problem in the concrete subfloor at this home. Our client said that they would feel better using the Bostik GreenForce adhesive with moisture control membrane so we did. Based on our years of experience, Dan’s Floor Store uses Bostik’s adhesives exclusively in our work.
Because of the 8 inch width of these French Oak wood flooring planks, we used special flooring straps to hold the planks together during installation.
Our client selected a grayish colored engineered, 8 inch wide by 5/8 inch thick Bella Cera French Oak hardwood designated Maracantonio in their Villa Borghese collection. This hardwood flooring is double smoked, wire brushed, hand distressed and hand stained, for an appearance that is very beachy and current.
We also removed all of the existing baseboards as part of this project. We replaced the old baseboards with 5 1/4 inch tall new baseboards and shoe molding.
Needless to say our customers were absolutely thrilled with the outcome of our work! They love their new wood floors! Reviewing this project, Dan was also very happy with the results he achieved. Dan is probably his own number one critic. Dan’s Floor Store focuses on the goal of the best craftsmanship possible with every Dan’s floor store project.

New Birch Stair Treads for World Golf Village Home
/in wood staircase installation, wood staircase refinishing /by adminBecause a couple who are prior clients and homeowners in the World Golf Village community loved the engineered wood flooring that we had installed for them, they called us back for a new project.
This project involved installing 18 new solid birch stair treads. Some of the treads are very long. The stair treads range in size from the smallest, about 48″ long to the longer ones which are 60″ long to as much as 72″ long.
One of the signs of a well done stair tread installation is how tightly the treads fit to the skirt boards between the wall and the end of each stair tread. Dan’s Floor Store uses a precision jig that we built for making these cuts, to ensure each stair tread fits very tight to the skirt boards of the stairway.
For the bottom stair step, we filled out a frame that attached the subtread, to conform to the curved end of the bottom stair tread for the look that our clients wanted. Using some flexible riser material, we created a flawless look for the riser, including the curved surface of the step.
When Dan’s Floor Store installs and finishes new stair treads, or when we refinish existing stair treads, we pre-finish all of the treads to match the wood flooring prior to installing them. This approach ensures we won’t have any stain blotches / blemishes / over paint on the adjacent painted skirt board, and reduces some of the stain odor in the home. The stair case landings are usually the only portions of a stair case refinishing project that we have to sand, stain and finish in place.
The new birch stair treads turned out really beautiful! We stained them twice with Duraseal stain in Antique Brown. Then we finished the treads with three coats of Bona Mega Clear HD satin.

Installing Solid Red Oak Wood Flooring – Avondale
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, wood floor weave-in /by adminIn order to provide a good base for the new Red Oak wood flooring in this home, and as shared in an earlier article, we previously installed plywood subfloor in the kitchen and several other areas of their home.
The new rift and quarter sawn unfinished Red Oak wood flooring was installed in the kitchen (which was formerly tile) and in several bedrooms, and closets. This Red Oak flooring installation included over 12 different weave-in sections to allow the new wood flooring to run apparently seamlessly from one room to the next.
Our Dan’s Floor Store wood flooring work complies with NWFA standards to provide beautiful results and long lasting wood floors for our customers. As an example, when installing solid wood flooring like this one, it’s important to leave room for the wood to expand and contract. That’s why we install expansion joints (which you can see in some of the photos), using nickels between the boards every 10 feet.
Once the new Red Oak wood flooring has properly acclimated, we will sand all of the wood flooring in the home, and then refinish those floors. The sand and finish portion of this project will be shared in a future article on our Dan’s Floor Store website.
The client’s home has a nice view of the St. Johns River at sunset from the back yard of their home.

Plywood subfloor for Red Oak Flooring Installation – Avondale
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, wood floor weave-in /by adminSome wood flooring installations require the prior addition of a plywood subfloor over the concrete slab.
This work was in preparation for a weave-in rift and quarter sawn solid Red Oak wood floor installation, with sand and finish project.
First we lay down a 6 mil thick layer of Visqueen moisture barrier along with lap cement. We carefully roll out the plastic moisture barrier to cover the concrete slab after laying tar down with a trowel.
Next we carry in our sheets of 3/4″ CDX plywood to serve as subfloor. We cut the the plywood to fit according to the American Plywood Association / Engineered Wood Association and National Wood Flooring Association standards
We fasten each sheet of plywood with our Hilti DX2 nailer gun. This gun shoots 1 1/2″nails thru the plywood and into the concrete. This step really fastens our plywood securely to the concrete slab!
In a few weeks we will return to our client’s home and weave-in and install, then later sand and finish the Red Oak flooring installation. Here’s our link to our article about about the installation of the rift and quarter sawn Red Oak hardwood flooring.

Wood Look Tiles and River Rock Installation in Atlantic Beach
/in New Tile Installation /by adminHomeowners in Atlantic Beach called us for a free consultation and estimate for installing wood look tile and river rock flooring for some of the floors and bath and shower areas of their home.
The project involved installing 1000 square feet of wood look floor tiles, and also installing wood look tile in the two shower areas in the home.
One shower area was a stand up shower, in which we installed River Rock flooring by Emser Tile and mirror image corners. The other shower area that we tiled was a tub and shower surround.
The first step of the flooring installation portion of this project was cleaning and leveling the concrete subfloor. As these photos show, there was a massive amount of leveling that had to take place to ensure a flat floor prior to the tile installation.
These photos show us installing the wood look floor tiles. The tile installation was executed in a three step pattern, in which every other one will repeat. The tiles were centered up nicely in the long hallway. One of the installation photos shows some of the intricate tile cuts required to follow the outline of the natural stone surface around the fireplace foundation.
Here are some photos of the wood look tiles being installed on the walls of the tub & shower surround.
And these photos show the wood look floor tiles and tub and shower surround tiles, and River Rock floor installed.

Domestic Hickory Hardwood Flooring Installation in Kensington
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminNot long ago, some walk-in customers to our showroom, were looking for some wood flooring to replace the carpeting in their home, which is located in the Kensington subdivision in St. Augustine.
After 3 to 4 years, most standard, commercial grade carpeting starts to deteriorate and becomes harder to clean. If anyone in the carpeted home or business office has allergies, worn carpeting tends to trap more pollen and other allergens, causing problems year around.
Because of the width of these wood floor planks, we used special flooring straps to hold the domestic Hickory hardwood flooring planks together during installation.
This wood flooring installation project took us six days in total. Our clients are very happy with their new wood floors, and we are really happy too, because we like to satisfy the customer!

Screen and Tung Oil Recoat Oak Floors in Ponte Vedra Beach
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminDan’s Floor Store works hard to make sure our client is happy with our wood flooring services and tile and stone services. We are very pleased and thankful that a lot of our business comes from repeat customers and clients’ referrals.
Our clients called us back to screen and recoat their wood floor with Tung oil. Periodic refinishing is a maintenance service for quality wood floors.
Tung oil comes from the Tung tree, and is the only coating we know of that is impermeable to water. It gives a natural, long-lasting finish to wood floors, and is environmentally friendly.
We found some pet stains in the clients’ floor. We scraped and sanded them out, then built up that area with a few coats of Tung oil.
Next we screened (sanded) the floor. And we finished the floor with two new coats of Tung oil.
These refinished Red and White Oak wood floors look great and Tung oil will keep them looking good for many more years.
Dan’s Floor Store loves to work for repeat clients! These customers are great people and we are proud to say they have been our clients for almost ten years. Life is good!

Refinishing Old Solid Red Oak Wood Floors in St. Augustine for a Beachy Look
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminThe home is located near the St. Augustine Amphitheater and very close to the lighthouse.
Here are some photos of the old, clear grade solid Red Oak wood flooring in the client’s home. You can see a water damaged areas in clearly in some of the photos.
First we sanded the drab old wood floors. The first photo shows all of the machinery we used for this project. You can see our sanders and the commercial vacuum that we attach to collect the sanding dust. The second photo shows an area of the sanded old Red Oak flooring near the doorway. The third photo shows our floor sander vacuum sanding the floor. The last photo in this group shows how we used a hand scraper to “pull” all the ends of the sanded planks, to eliminate any sanding marks on the wood floors. The sanding work on this job was absolutely impeccable!
Our crew used a collection of Bona products for this project. We used a Classic Gray stain to create the beachy look. Then our crew finished these wood floors with two coats of Bona mega clear HD satin – and a final coat of Bona Traffic satin.
As you could see in several areas of the old solid Red Oak wood floor before we sanded it, some areas had water stains. Those water stains were very hard to see after the wood floor had been stained and refinished.
The homeowners were absolutely thrilled with the way their floors looked. Dan’s Floor Store works hard on each and every project to have happy customers.

Oak Hardwood Flooring Installation in St. Augustine
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminJacksonville, Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine; we live so near the Atlantic Ocean, we often get requests for ideas to give a home or office a beachy look with new wood flooring.
Dan’s Floor Store delivers!
First we cleaned and leveled the subfloor. You can see that there was a lot of leveling for this wood floor installation. Leveling the subfloor is important to protect the wood flooring from flexing damage after installation.
Then we installed the new Oak wood flooring, using Bostik Vapor-Lock adhesive, which provides moisture control and sound reduction qualities in addition to holding the wood flooring planks in place. We selected the Bostik Vapor Lock adhesive for this wood floor installation because sound reduction is a good quality to add in a condo.
Our client was excited and happy when they saw how nice this new Oak wood floor looked. And Dan’s Floor Store always likes to have happy clients.
