Saltwater Cowboys, a popular barbecue and seafood restaurant in St. Augustine, Florida, called Dan’s Floor Store for a free consultation and estimate for repairing their wood floors.
Hurricane Matthew that came through our area in northeastern Florida in the fall of 2016 did a lot of damage to local homes and businesses, including Saltwater Cowboys.
During the storm, Saltwater Cowboys got inundated during hurricane Matthew which happened to many homes and businesses in areas of Saint Augustine close to the river or intracoastal waterway. And this restaurant is sitting directly on the intracoastal.
The flooring that was existing at the restaurant was reclaimed Heart Pine. The original reclaimed Heart Pine flooring planks were tongue and groove joints, 7 1/2 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches thick.
Only some of the original Heart Pine flooring was able to be reused with the full tongue and groove. The remainder of the original reclaimed Heart Pine flooring was ripped down into 6 inch wide boards. These ripped-down boards did not have any tongue and groove.
As a result of the hurricane damage, Saltwater Cowboys had to go through a massive restoration including a new subfloor, new joists, new decks and many other new items, but they were able to reuse at least some of their flooring.
Among the repairs to be able to open Saltwater Cowboys after the storm, the owners had to replace all of the beams underneath the building. Seeing an opportunity among so much damage and destruction, they re-used the old Heart Pine beams, having them milled and re-planed into 1 1/2 ” thick by nearly 10″ wide floor planks!
The method that we used for installing the planks of reclaimed Heart Pine flooring was to glue and nail all the flooring in place.
The reclaimed Heart Pine plank flooring of varied lengths and widths looks great installed.

Wire Brushed Oak Flooring Installation – Nocatee
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminThis Dan’s Floor Store wire brushed Oak flooring residential installation project took place in a home in the Twenty Mile Village community in Nocatee. Florida.
The first phase of this project was removing all of the floor tile from the kitchen area, and all of the carpeting in the home.
Next we had to level the entire concrete slab subfloor after (as is our standard practice) checking for any moisture issues since it was a new poured slab. (The moisture content of the slab dictates the selection of leveling material used for the job. Moisture coming up from the concrete subfloor can damage wood flooring.)
We had to do quite an extensive amount of leveling on this job. Some leveling areas show up in the wood flooring installation photos that follow. Having a level surface for a wood flooring installation prevents damage to the wood flooring and helps the wood flooring last much longer.
Our clients selected an engineered, wire brushed, White Oak wood flooring made by Naturally Aged flooring, called Snow Cap. This wire brushed Oak flooring is 1/2″ thick x 7 1/2″ wide and comes in random lengths, from 2′ to 6′, with white stain within the soft wood grain. From the Naturally Aged Flooring photo of this character grade White Oak flooring, you can see it has a natural looking white tone without so much character in the flooring to make it look too rustic.
Our clients are very pleased with their new wire brushed Oak flooring installation, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients.
New wood floors (whether solid wood, engineered wood, or laminate), or refinishing the wood flooring in your home or business office will improve its looks and value. Give Dan’s Floor Store a call 904.887.8303 to make an appointment for a free consultation and estimate.

Character Grade White Oak Flooring – Install, Sand and Finish – Crescent Beach
/in New Wood Flooring Installation, sand and finish wood flooring /by adminOne home improvement that can increase the value of your home or business is replacing the carpeting that was originally installed with wood flooring. Replacing original carpeting with wood floors can also help reduce the allergic symptoms of those who live or work in the building.
And if your home or business already has wood flooring, refinishing an older, worn wood floor can increase its selling price by improving the appearance of your property.
Dan’s Floor Store both installs wood floors and refinishes wood floors (and we do some nice tile work, too).
This job was a 2600 square foot install, sand and finish character grade White Oak flooring project for our Dan’s Floor Store crew. This project home was in Crescent Beach, Florida. Also we installed thirty-two, 54″ wide White Oak stair treads and stained them to match.
The species used in this project was a character grade White Oak flooring, 7 1/2″ x 9/16″.
This home is on the ocean. While working this flooring project, we also enjoyed the beautiful views of the beckoning Atlantic.
We cut the stairs in with a stair jig, which is shown in one of the following photos. Also we sanded and stained the treads to match the White Oak stair railing.
The color we used for the stain was Golden Brown DuraSeal mixed with neutral DuraSeal 50-50 mix. Then we coated the job with the Bona Mega extra mat waterborne polyurethane for the first two coats and finished the final coat with a topcoat of Bona Traffic HD extra matte.
And the homeowners agreed, this turned out to be a beautiful wood floor and stairway project.

Red Oak Clear Grade Flooring Sand and Finish – St. Augustine
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminWhen Hurricane Matthew came through northeastern Florida in the fall of 2016, many homes located near the ocean were flooded and water damaged.
Fortunately for the owners of this home in the Davis Shores neighborhood of St. Augustine, their solid plank Red Oak clear grade flooring was not water damaged beyond saving. Dan’s Floor Store could sand and finish this 1950s era wood flooring to restore it to its former beauty.
After sanding the wood floors, we applied Bona oil-modified Woodline polyurethane finish to provide a tough protecting coating to the Red Oak clear grade flooring with a slight amber color that enhances the natural tone of the wood.
The finished floors look very clean, the builder doing the rest of the home restoration was very pleased with our workmanship, and the homeowners were very happy with their refinished solid plank Red Oak clear grade flooring.

Wire-Brushed Oak Hardwood Flooring Install – St. Augustine
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminIf you are thinking about improvements to your home or business involving wood or vinyl flooring or tile work, call Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for a free consultation and estimate.
That’s what a couple living in southwest St. Augustine, Florida did. They wanted to replace their existing flooring with new wood flooring. They chose engineered, wire-brushed Oak hardwood flooring, 9 3/4″ wide by 5/8″ thick in random lengths by Naturally Aged Flooring – “Santa Cruz” for their new wood floors.
First we removed over 2,700 square feet of their existing flooring. Wood flooring requires a flat surface to minimize damage to the wood and maximize the flooring life. The concrete slab subfloor in this home required a lot of leveling, as you can see in these photos.
With the subfloor leveling completed, we installed the new wire-brushed Oak hardwood flooring. We matched the thresholds/”t” molding to the new wood flooring, and also did some baseboard work and new shoe molding.
This wood flooring project took about two weeks, and the new hardwood floors are really beautiful throughout. Our clients were very happy with their new wire-brushed Oak hardwood flooring, and Dan’s Floor Store likes to have happy clients.

Refinishing and Restoring Old Heart Pine Plank Flooring – St. Augustine
/in Wood Floor Refinishing /by adminOwners of a home on the harbor in St. Augustine contacted Dan’s Floor Store 904.887.8303 for one of our free consultations and estimates on refinishing and restoring their water damaged old Heart Pine flooring.
Living near the water, the wood floors in their home had gotten water damaged during hurricane Matthew in the fall of 2016.
The water damage made the old Heart Pine plank flooring in this home very unlevel, but we knew how to restore and refinish them.
The wood was so unlevel our Dan’s Floor Store crew had to sand the wood floors 5 times at a 45 degree angle to get it flat again. Then we could come back and sand with a cut straight with the wood grain for the final sanding.
These Heart Pine planks came from Longleaf Pine trees, which were overharvested in southeastern America in the 1900’s and can now only be reclaimed or river recovered.
The old Heart Pine plank flooring in this home is very, very old. We found the old, sanded flooring to be stunning looking, even before staining or finishing with polyurethane.
The homeowners wanted Dan’s Floor Store to refinish and restore their old Heart Pine plank flooring to match the same color as the stairs in the home (which had not been damaged by the water.
We chose Bona Rosewood stain as a good, blending match with the stairs.
Our crew finished this project with 3 coats of gloss Oil-Modified Polyurethane Woodline finish by Bona.
The old Heart Pine plank floors look great again, and our clients were very happy with the results of our work.

Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation – Manatee Cafe – St. Augustine
/in vinyl plank flooring /by adminAs a result of one of our free consultations and estimates, another commercial job for Dan’s Floor Store this year!
The Manatee Cafe in St. Augustine is a predominantly vegetarian, vegan Cafe. It’s a really great breakfast and lunch place off of SR16.
They chose Mannington AduraMax Bay Breeze vinyl plank flooring, creating an image of vintage, reclaimed oak plank flooring for this project. Vinyl plank has taken off as a great flooring for commercial spaces. This project would also entail putting in new shoe molding.
We did not want the Cafe to close (and lose business) on our behalf, in order to get their new vinyl flooring installed. We estimated that it would take two nights to complete the job, so we offered to execute the job while they were closed. (This became a night job.) We were able to install the vinyl plank flooring over the existing tile flooring, saving some time on this project.
Here are some photos of the existing flooring in the Cafe.
These photos show us installing the new, textured vinyl plank flooring.
This is how the new vinyl plank floors look installed in the Cafe.
This new vinyl plank flooring gave a newer, brighter look to the restaurant and updated its look to current.
Let’s just say they were “floored” by our workmanship!

Engineered Maple Flooring Replacing Tile – Palencia
/in New Wood Flooring Installation /by adminPalencia Golf and Country Club community homeowners called Dan’s Floor Store for our free consultation and estimate. They wanted to replace 1600 square feet of tile flooring that had been originally installed in their home with wood flooring. Home improvements can often improve the value of a home, as well as make it more enjoyable for the owners.
Our clients chose an engineered maple flooring made by Mirage; 6 1/4″ X 1/2″called Maple Peppermint, it has a grey color and is a very beautiful flooring.
Mirage is one of the best brands of engineered wood flooring in the industry. It is FSC certified wood flooring. The FSC stamp is the hardest stamp to get on wood flooring, because FSC is the Forestry Stewardship Council. That means that all of the wood comprised in the Mirage engineering wood flooring is eco sound and compliant to the highest standards.
Our crew had a lot of floor tile to remove. We put plastic film over cabinets and appliances, to protect them during tile removal.
Then we leveled the concrete slab sub floor. A level surface helps wood flooring last longer.
After leveling the slab we also had to seal the concrete with Bostik’s MVP (Moisture Vapor Protection) prior to installation. Sealer was required because the slab had tile put on it before it was fully cured. Not letting the concrete slab cure before installing tile traps the moisture between slab and tile. Dan’s Floor Store understands how this trapped moisture can penetrate and damage new wood flooring. It is our practice to check every concrete slab for trapped moisture prior to installation.
With the sub floor leveled, the installation of the engineered maple flooring progressed smoothly.
Needless to say this maple flooring job turned out really beautiful! Our clients were very pleased with the new look that the maple wood floors gave their home. And Dan’s Floor Store likes having happy clients!

Reclaimed Heart Pine Plank Flooring Sealing & Finishing – St. Augustine, FL

Reclaimed Heart Pine Flooring Repair & Refinishing – St. Augustine, FL
Installing the reclaimed Heart Pine plank flooring was a really unique job; to be using a recycled floor that had been there for over 65 years was a challenge and was really fun for our Dan’s Floor Store crew.
After installing the reclaimed flooring, we recommended it be coated. Dan made some samples up for the decorators and at the last second, he decided to do a whitewashed sample using Bona Nordic (a white washing, innovative new sealer made by Bona). The decorators agreed with Dan’s recommendation after seeing the samples.
The white washed look might be a little hard to see in the photos, but this white washing process really lends a very coastal and beachy appearance to these reclaimed Heart Pine floors, it fits into the motif of the restaurant perfectly.
With three coats of Bona Nordic sealer applied, to give the reclaimed heart pine plank flooring a frosted whitewashed appearance, we top coated these wooden floors with Bona Traffic HD extra matte which is a very durable, commercially rated finish.
We agree with our clients; their whitewashed reclaimed heart pine floors turned out looking excellent!
